WILLIE JAMES BARNES, SR. was born June 1, 1936 in Lancaster County, South Carolina. Willie fought his battle against cancer for many long years. Despite spending much of that time in and out of the hospital, he never lost his sense of humor. Throughout his entire journey, he cracked jokes with his grown children, made silly faces with grandchildren and friends, he never lost his sense of humor. He had a great ability to make others smile and his sense of humor will be missed.
On December 22, 1956, Willie James Barnes, Sr. was joined in Holy Matrimony to his late wife, Lulu Mae Barnes.
Willie worked for W.R. Grace & Co. and retired after 40 years of service. Willie believed in creating his own opportunities, and for 25 years, he owned and operated a home improvement service.
A loving husband, father, brother and friend, Willie loved cooking, barbequing and fishing. He also loved being a granddad and enjoyed taking care of his grandchildren. Willie was the life of the party and many considered him the neighborhood "Pops" because he was cool and down-to-earth with everyone. He was a member of the People Church of Baltimore City, and nothing made him more joyful than singing the gospels on the choir.
He leaves to cherish his memory his nine children Sheila, Samuel, Brenda, Willie, Jr., Theresa, Billy, Renee, Anthony and Niecy, Tasha Barnes daughter-in-law. Willie is survived by his brother Earnest L. Barnes, of South Carolina. He also leaves to treasure his memory a host of grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and many caring neighbors and friends.
