Walter Vaughan Obituary

Walter Edward Vaughan was born in Baltimore Maryland on Thursday, August 11, 1938 to Bernice Ola Vaughan and the late Edward Odell Vaughan.  He was the fourth child of thirteen (13) children.

Walter received eternal rest on May 18, 2019, at Future Care Nursing Home, located on 4800 Seton Drive off Northern Parkway in Baltimore.

Affectionately called “Eddie” by all of his dear friends, “Unc" by his nephews and Wall-la by his siblings, no-one called him Walter.

Walter was educated in the Baltimore City public schools. As a child he raised pigeons for a hobby. While serving as a drummer  in the Dunbar Senior High School band, he also worked as a lifeguard at the community recreation center.

At Dunbar Senior High, his best friend and partner in crime was Joe Gilliam. Everyone thought they were brothers. The two friends dressed alike, acted alike and got into trouble together. One was not seen without the other.

Walter’s first car was a hearse. Yes, a hearse and he was so proud of his car, although none of his siblings wanted to ride with him.

In 1957 he married one of his many girlfriends and the love of his life, Earnesteen Shade.  Teen as she is known was a majorette in Dunbar’s band and remained his queen for 62 years.

Walter remained gainfully employed throughout his life.  He always took care of his home, wife and kids. As a young man he was employed at McKay’s Grocery store in the 1400 block of Preston Street. He and his partner in crime (Joe) also worked at the Apollo Theater on Harford Rd. He also delivered meat for Old Line Custom Meat Company then located on Fulton and Pennsylvania Avenue. He and his cousin the late Billy Winkler may have shared more meat than they delivered. Moving on to a better job he gained employment as an orderly at Crownsville State Hospital, where he and Joe probably should have been residents due to their animated personality. Progressing further in his career he became employed at Armstar Domino Sugar Corporation, a staple in Baltimore’s downtown harbor area.  He remained at Domino for over 30 years until his retirement.

After retirement, Walter worked as a driver for Calvin B. Scruggs Funeral Home.

Walter had one daughter Ray Ray Vaughan. Together he and Teen raised three sons Aaron Woodford, Anthony Hice, Daryl McAlily and a god daughter Vicky Eaton.

As an adult, Walter became a member of New Antioch Baptist Church, where he served on the senior usher board.  He loved to march, even though he was always out of step.

Walter and Teen always enjoyed attending church services. Together they explored numerous hobbies: videoing weddings, carbarets and discos, dancing and just enjoying a good party with each other.

Walter was preceded in death by his father Edward Odell Vaughan (2005 ), siblings James Odell Vaughan (1965 Vietnam ), Delores Vaughan ( 1937), Lorraine Watson (2008) , his oldest niece Diana Banks (2004), nephews, Omar Vaughn (1996) and Robert Vaughn Junior (2006), mother-in-law Pauline Westmoreland and brother-in-law Nathaniel Sweet.

He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife Earnesteen, mother Bernice O. Vaughan, children, Ray Ray Vaughan, Aaron Woodfolk, Anthony Hice, Daryl MacAlily and Vicky Eaton.  Siblings Elizabeth Nesbit, Marjorie Queen, Beulah Reeves, Bernadine Scruggs, Janice Faulkner, Carrol (Marsha), Robert (Lanae), Garry (Suzanne), and Tyrone (Mike) Vaughan. In laws Priscilla Sweet, Lettie Bristol, Clarence and Wanda Shade, Carolyn and William Gray of North Carolina and a host of nieces, nephews relatives and friends.

Special thanks to his dear brother Carrol who made sure he had the best of care, his great niece Dana’ Neal, the 3rd floor unit head Nurse at Future Care, his nephew Duane, the staff at Meals on Wheels, who helped take care of him while he was still in his home and all of the staff at Future Care, who shared acts of kindness during his stay. Thanks to Pete and Ruby Winkler; your visits were priceless.

Obituary lovingly submitted, for our daughter/sister-in-law Teen from Walter’s mother and siblings.
