Samuel"Big Hop" Hopson Obituary

SAMUEL JAMES HOPSON, affectionately known as "Sam Hop", was born on December 6, 1949 to the late Charlie and Dorothy Hopson in Turner Station, Md. He departed this life on Wednesday, October 7, 2020 after a brief illness.

Sam Hop received his early education from the Turner Station School System. He later moved to Baltimore City and attended Baltimore City College High School. He enlisted in the US Army in September 1969 and was honorable discharged in September 1971.

Sam held numerous jobs and retired from the City of Baltimore Department of Solid Waste after 29 years of service.

He met the love of his life Donna Cassell in 1968 and together, they had their first child Sam. Years later, their second child, Shaunna was born.

He had a passion for taking pictures and videos of family, friends and events. Especially, the basketball careers of his son and grandson. He was a people person and loved working at the Hands on Carwash. Sam has an amazing relationship with his grandkids. He loved doing stuff with them and made it to all their events. He had a soft spot for his grandbabies.

Sam Hop was known and loved throughout Baltimore and will truly be missed by everyone who knew him. He ended all his conversations with "ONE LOVE"

Sam accepted Christ in his life and was baptized on March 6, 2005 at the Pleasant Zion Baptist Church by Dr. James B. Gray.

He leaves to cherish precious memories: one daughter, Shaunna Cassell, one son, Sam Cassell (Shalonda), two grandsons, Sam Jr. and Caron, two granddaughters, Mikayla and Erionna; three sisters, Mary Jackson, Dorothy Alston and Judith Dukes; two brothers, Charles "Lump" Hopson (Brenda) and Lawrence "Bug" Hopson (preceded in death), one aunt, Ann Hopson, 9 nieces and 12 nephews. He had a special bond with nephews, Mike and Marlin; sister-in-law, Kim Stevenson; brother-in-law, Darrin Cassell, special friends, Arnold, Tightman, Motion, Bernard and Tiger, and a host of other relatives and fiends.
