Philip Hillard Wood was born to the late Raymond and the late Leona Lucille Brown on March 6, 1939 in Monroe County West, Virginia. Philip departed this earthly life on October 25, 2020 at the age of 81.
In in formative years, he attended a one oor Black Elementary School approximately one mile up at mountain and Monroe Street. He attended Alderson and Lincoln High School graduating from Lincoln. He furthered his education by attending Morgan State University.
Philip attended Shiloh Baptist Church, the only Black church in Alderson, West Virginia. He participated in Sunday School, morning church and other church related activities as a youth.
In order for the family to survive, his mother worked and his grandmother, Ms. Gussie Kate Brown played a pivotal part in his growth and development.
He met and married Laura Nelson in Hinton West, Virginia and from that union two daughters; Donna and Philette were born. Some years later, he met and married Kate Viola Rawles and from that union, they were blessed with four sons, Philip, Aubrey, Jordan and Cody.
Philip loved all sports and would sit and watch his favorite games and often attended the games where he got live first-handed enjoyment on the spot. His greatest hobby was, shing, which he did often. Another hobby he liked was the challenge of putting things together, which came in handy around the house with four boys. As a family man, he was very proud of his children, grandchildren and was overjoyed to be able to enjoy his great grandchildren. He enjoyed watching them grow and develop into productive members of this challenging society. The children often would say,” I am glad that dad is here for us”.
Philip worked for General Plumbing Supply and Ferguson Plumbing Supply Companies, as an Over the Counter Manager. On his job, he was known as “Woody” as he was so affectionately called by his friends and co-workers. Philp was known as a loyal worker and true friend. Through his life’s journey, Philp met and made many friends, whom he cherished and enjoyed spending time with. They knew that Philp was a true friend and will miss him dearly.
As God removed Philp from this earthly home and placed him in the heavenly vineyard, he leaves to cherish his memories his devoted wife, Kate V. Wood of the home, two daughters: Donna E. Henderson,(Mitchell) and Philette L. Wood from Ohio; ve sons: Mark A. Batts of West Virginia, Philip H. Wood and Aubrey W. Wood of Maryland, Jordan D. Wood and Cody A. Wood of West, Virginia, an adopted son, Lenny Johnson of Maryland. Two brothers in- law, George and Harry Brickhouse, two sisters-in-law, Gwendolyn Brickhouse and Margaret Thomas. Fifteen grandchildren, Raine Ferguson, India Morning, Makenzie Henderson, Lakeea Henderson, Sheldon Henderson, Jushua Brown, Wayna Wood, Aubrey Winter Wood, Paris Wood, Hailey Noir, Jaylan Wood, Antonius Sanchez Wood, David Wood, seven great grandchildren, Rahman Richardson, Riley Richman, Nova Ferguson, Camren Michie, Dorian Fair, Zoe A. Davis and Calliah R. Davis. Children that preceded Philp in death: Francseea Batts, Ethel Loraine and her husband Stervin K. Fegerson, and two grandchildren: Little Mitchell D. Henderson II, Little Maximillian Batts. Additionally, Philip leaves to cherish his memories his best friends; Betty and Harry Logan,a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends and loved ones who will miss him dearly.
