Melvin Jackson was born on August 5, 1936, to the late Charles Jackson and Dorothy Anderson-Jackson. After the death of both parents, Melvin was raised by his foster parents, Jerome and Mary Gross. On May 11, 2022, God called Melvin home to rest.
Melvin, was the youngest of eight children. He received his education in the Baltimore City Public School System. He worked at Bethlehem Steel Shipyard for over 48 years, where he gained many life-long friends. He started in the Labor Department and then transferred to the Transportation department, where he remained until retirement. He operated every piece of equipment in the department, from the forklift to the crane. Instead of resting on his days off, Melvin worked part-time driving a taxi for Sun Cab Company.
Melvin, met and married Jannie-Bee McCollough in 1955, and from this union seven children were born. He later met Rosetta Horton, with whom he has one daughter. Later in life, Melvin married Stacey Ann George, and gained seven stepchildren.
Melvin grew up in East Baltimore, where he was affectionately known as “Bep”. He was an outstanding father and grandfather. He had the perfect smile that lit up any room. He loved playing the lottery, traveling, and visiting casinos, but most of all he loved his music. If you heard the Temptations playing loudly, it was more than likely Melvin driving up the block. After retiring, Melvin enjoyed being the family’s Uber driver, transporting grandkids and great-grandkids to school and extra-curricular activities.
Melvin leaves to cherish his memory: his wife, Stacey George Jackson; one son, Melvin Jackson, Jr.; four daughters, Melvina Jackson, Carole Harris (Steven), Dorthiners Cloude (Mark), and Tiffany Jackson (Byron); seven stepchildren, Leon, Stacey, Sabrina, Keona, William, Shamea and Shawn; eighteen grandchildren; forty great-grandchildren; thirteen great-great grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Catherine Gross, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Melvin was preceded in death by his eight siblings, Lillian, Thelma, Calvin, Roland, Virginia, Raymond, stepbrother Perry, and his twin, Baby-boy Jackson; his first wife, Jannie-Bee Jackson; daughter, Bessie-Mae Dorsey; son, Bryant Lamont Jackson; five grandsons, Stanley Dorsey, Timothy Jackson, George Blain, Carlos Jackson and Joseph Jackson; and one great-grandson, Baby Joe.
