Mary Hall Obituary

Mary G. Hall, daughter of the late George and Cleora Foster, was born on April 4 ,1932 in Blackstock, South Carolina. She departed this life on January 30, 2018 at Gilchrist Hospice Center after a lengthy illness.

Mary, who was known to all as “Mary G”, received her education from the Fairfield County Public School System in Fairfield, South Carolina. Mary G. accepted Christ at an early age and became a member of Sweet Prospect A.M.E. Church in Chester South Carolina.

On December 24,1952, Mary G was wedded to the late Samuel Hall and out of this union, two children were born, Samuel Karl and George Gregory Hall.

In 1955, Mary G and Sam, known as “SM”, ventured to Baltimore, Maryland where she joined the Friendship Baptist Church located on Eager and Bond Street. She was a devoted member for over 50 years. Her love for singing resulted in her membership with the Culp Jubilee Vocal Choir and the Community Vocal Choir of Baltimore. Mary G. was also a member of the social club, the Spiritual Six, where she enjoyed planning trips and traveling with the club.

Mary G. started her career at St. Joseph Hospital on Caroline Street in the 1950’s. Often told were stories of how she earned $2.35/week, but with the help of God and her husband, could provide all the necessities for the family. Additionally, she would reminisce on how African American staff were unable to enter the front of the hospital when reporting for work at the Caroline Street location. St. Joseph Hospital relocated to Towson where Mary G. continued her career as a Certified Nursing Assistant; however, she was reporting for work through the front of the building. Mary G. remained employed at St. Joseph Medical Center and retired after 36 years of employment at the Towson location.

Mary G. leaves her legacy to be carried on by two sons, Samuel & George (Lenora), five grandchildren: Kristopher Hall of San Diego, California; Brandon (Shenedra) Hall of Bowie, Maryland; Taylor, Morgan & Jordan Hall of Baltimore Maryland; two great grandchildren: Camryn and Caleb Hall of Bowie, Maryland; four siblings: James Foster of South Carolina, Mattie Hedgepeth of Baltimore, Maryland, Annie Ruth Coleman (Thomas) of Winnsboro South Carolina, Willie Foster (Ernestine) of Winnsboro South Carolina; a “sister/cousin” who preceded her in death, Helen Hemphill; and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.

Mary G was devoted to her husband and sons all her life and worked hard to assure they had the best she could afford. Mary G. will truly be missed by all.
