Lessie M. Baker - Bey (lovingly called Dardie) was born Lessie M. Yates on December 26, 1923 in Suffolk, Virginia. She was the daughter of the late Leslie Yates and Fannie Robertson.
Lessie received her formal education in the Suffolk County Public School System. In Nansemond County, Virginia, she was employed with the Planter’s Nut and Chocolate Company as a laborer. There she met the love of her life, George Baker. Shortly after meeting, they got married on September 26, 1946. In 1948, they both moved to Baltimore, Maryland, to continue their lives together. She held numerous jobs including working at Southern Packing Company. Eventually, she retired from General Electric in Columbia, Maryland in 1998.
In 1967, Lessie’s husband converted to Islamic Faith which ultimately changed their last name to Baker- Bey.
In 1992, Lessie and her husband became members of The Ray of Hope Baptist Church of Baltimore, Maryland. She was a faithful member until her passing.
Lessie was preceded in death by her mother Fannie, father Leslie, sister Viola, and her devoted husband of 75 years, George.
She leaves behind to cherish her memory, her Daughter Joyce and son in-law Clarence P. Johnson, 2 Grandsons: Clarence D. (wife Quiana) Johnson, and Randy (wife Monique) Johnson, 7 Grandchildren: Rashad, Darius, Kiya, Quion, Malik, Myonna, and Makai, and 1 Great Great Granddaughter: Dior. Numerous family, friends, and church members. A very loving friend and Pastor, Donald Palmore, from the New Good Samaritan Baptist Church in Baltimore, Maryland
