Lance Matthews Obituary

Lance Virgil Matthews Sr. was born on November 02,1970 to the late Marilyn E. Matthews and Samuel L. Perkins in Baltimore, Maryland. He was called home to God’s kingdom suddenly on October 14, 2020.

Lance aka Chubbs, received his education in the Baltimore City Public School Systems, and later received his certifications in Culinary Arts. Lance worked in the food industry for over 25 years. His first job was working as a prep cook. He was a dedicated, hard worker, that his passion for cooking led himself to be employed with many top restaurants through out Baltimore. He worked at some of Baltimore’s finest restaurants: The Charter House, Kona Grill, M&S Grill, and Uno restaurant. He had such a great personality and thrived to conquer the food industry; he was promoted to Executive Chef. Lance aka Chubbs was a force to be reckoned with in the kitchen. He enjoyed coming up with many recipes served around the Baltimore Region. As a young boy Chubbs enjoyed watching basketball games at Chick Webb Recreation Center, in which he met numerous of young stars that grew with him. Lance had a smile that would lighten up the room. Many people grew to love him wherever he went.

Lance aka Chubbs enjoyed the finer things in life itself, he always cherished the holidays especially Thanksgiving and Christmas. With the help of his dear mother and aunts, he would sit up all night long criticizing and taste testing every dish that was on the menu. Chubbs would give his expertise about how and why you should prepare the food his way. His mother would say to him for years “please go sit down somewhere, this isn’t your restaurant! When do you cook for me!” His response of course would be challenged throughout the atmosphere….he would go on for hours talking about one of his favorite dish to cook, we all knew this, his world famous spaghetti, “Italian Spaghetti” as he would call it. He loved to gather his family and close friends. Chubbs loved to go hang out and stir up trouble in a good way. He was very outspoken, but most of all very sensitive to what others thought of him. He lived to go to his best friend’s Di-Di and Aunt Joe house to play video games and reminisce about the old times. His favorite television shows to watch was Law and Order, Seinfeld, and Five deadly venoms (karate shows). Those who knew him knew that he was a Spurs fan, but most of all a die heart Dallas Cowboy fan as well. He couldn’t wait for the season of football to start. Chubbs had so many Dallas Cowboy apparel and jerseys from the hats down to the underwear. He was their biggest fan. Chubbs would dress down in his teams clothing no matter the weather winter, spring, summer or fall, you name it he had it all. Not only he wore sports attire, but he also owned over 1,000 pairs of Nikes and Coogi sweaters from long ago.

In his spare time, Lance enjoyed being the family photographer, while cracking jokes and drinking his favorite happy juice, listening to his oldies but goodies music. Chubbs was the life of the party, he knew how to set the tone to any environment with his presents. He also, loved to go see the latest movies playing, along with going out to eat at restaurants like Cactus Willis, Golden Corral, and Hibachi Grill. When he wanted to take his Queen Bee out, he chose Mo’s Seafood all the time. Chubbs always wanted to spend his last days living in Hawaii. He really thought he was not African American, he would say “look at me I’m not black, my ancestors are Natives. I’m going to Hawaii to find my real people.” He had a strong personality, but he was the glue that had the Matthews Clan together. Most of all he had a special place in his grandmother Carrie, Aunt Sherrill and the love of his life Keisha’s heart. His leading lady, rather if they were on good or bad terms, they were unstoppable. This was his friend, lover, and children’s mother. They conquered the world together for over 27 years. She was his world, they did everything together, he loved her, and she loved him. Lance aka Chubbs was an incredible brother, cousin, friend, and most of all a great father to his children who he loved so dearly. He had many cherish able memories with his children and as a Big cousin to us all.

Preceding Lance in death is his mother Marilyn Matthews, father Samuel Perkins, brother Darnell Gray, three aunts Carol, Sherrill, and Melody Matthews; three uncles Theodore, Michael, and Daryl Matthews; his grandfather John Matthews; and best friend Cleveland “Di-Di”.

He leaves to carry on his legacy his brother Bryant Matthews; three children Lance Matthews Jr., Kechia Matthews, and Deja Matthews; grandmother Carrie Matthews; his leading lady Keisha Rowlett; step dad John Gray; three aunts Barbara, Gloria, and Kathleen Matthews, and host of close relatives and friend
