Fannie Wilkerson Obituary

Fannie Maude Wilkerson, a beloved wife to the late Harvey Wilkerson, loving mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, departed this earthly life on March 3, 2023. Born November 16, 1934, to the late Elijah and Virginia Royster in Granville County, North Carolina, she was one of ten children and was preceded in death by her siblings, Enoch, Reginald, Elijah Jr, Mac Arthur, Hess, Annie and Cornelia.

She received her education at Mary Potter Academy in Oxford, North Carolina. At an early age, Fannie joined Blue Wing Baptist Church, and moved her membership to Northeast Baptist Church and finally joined New Christian Baptist Fellowship Church, where she was loved by all.

Fannie met and fell in love with Harvey Wilkerson, whom she married on August 9, 1952, and from that union two daughters were born. In 1957, she and her family moved to Baltimore, MD where she would reside the rest of her years. Fannie was employed at Comfort Springs, Bugle Laundry, and by The Johns Hopkins University, from where she would later retire. Fannie never obtained her driver’s license but made sure her daughters did, so that they could drive her around.

Fannie, affectionately known as Mama, Grandma and Fannie Maude, enjoyed dancing and partying, traveling on bus trips, spending summer holidays in Indian Acres, Virginia and going to the “hot house” or second hand store. She loved attending all of the family functions, listening to her “oldies, but goodies”, having a beer with her crabs, requesting “99 cent sammiches”, cheesecake, Pattie pies and milkshakes.

She leaves to mourn and to carry on her legacy: two daughters, Bettie (Richard) Grimes and Cynthia McFadden Wilkerson; seven grandchildren, Damenen Robinson, LaTonya (Kevin) Cary, Richard (Monica) Grimes III, Georgette McCall Bennett, Shawnee Lawrence, Harold McFadden Jr., Marquita (David) Mitchell; two sisters, Gurtha Davis and Mary Reed, a host of nieces, nephews, great-grandchildren, relatives and friends.
