Ernest Mathis Obituary

Ernest Mathis, son of the late King Davis and Henrietta Mathis, was born on August 12, 1941, in Lee County South Carolina. He peacefully departed this life on April 27, 2023, at the blessed age of 81. He was the oldest of six siblings, he was preceded in death by Emmanuel Boxdale.

He was raised by his maternal grandmother, Roberta and educated in Sumpter, South Carolina. At the age of 13, he moved to Baltimore, Maryland to live with his father and Stepmother, Rosa Lee Davis. He continued his education at Clifton High School in Baltimore, MD. In 1968 he enlisted in the United States Army and served in the Vietnam War.

He chose the U.S. Army as a career and during that time he was stationed in several Countries, such as: Thailand, Germany, South Korea and various states including Hawaii.

In 1981 he married Mamie Lue Cheatum at which time he became the stepfather to Robert Pearson and Wendy Pearson (Wendy preceded him in death). He was the patriarch of the Family and still at the age of 81 was still able to remember everyone’s birthdays and phone numbers by heart. If no one else remembered, you were guaranteed to receive a beautiful heart felt birthday card from him. He was well known for his love of the Maryland Lottery system. He enjoyed taking you down memory lane and always had a great story to tell, stories that included celebrities that he met during his time in the military.

He was preceded in death by his grandson Stanley Bernard Joines, Jr.

Ernest is survived by his wife, Mamie L. Mathis; son, Robert Pearson; sisters, Rosalind J. Mitchell, and Adonica M. Brunson; brothers, Frederick Best and Darryl A. Smith, Sr.; grandchildren, Terry Brooks, Antonio Johnson, Dashaun Pearson, Deja Pearson, Brittani Pearson, and Brandon Pearson; nieces, Ronni D. Cannady, Katosha Sorrell, Andrea Johnson, and Shawnie Best; nephews, Marquel Averette Sr., Ronald Mitchell, Jr., and Darryl Smith, Jr. Ernest is also survived by a host of Cousins, great grandchildren, great nieces, great nephews, friends, and loved ones.
