DOROTHY E. MONTANEZ ( NEE BROWN), daughter of George Washington Brown, Sr. and Marie Madison, was born on June 1, 1931 in Baltimore, Maryland. She departed this life on February 19, 2020 at Franklin Square Hospital.
She was joined in holy matrimony to the late Balbino Montanez and out of this union two children were born, Barbara and Bambi Montanez.
Dorothy received her education in the Baltimore City Public School System. During the late 1950's and for nearly five decades, she was recognized and noted as one of Baltimore's first African-American female upholsterers.
Dorothy made family wherever she went and was well known, well loved and hugely admired by people from all walks of life in many of Baltimore's diverse neighborhoods.
Although she touted herself as the "well-traveled commuter" at times, she staked her claim in the community of Remington, once owning three houses on the same street. She was known to some as the mayor of Remington or simply Miss Dorothy. She walked through her neighborhood regularly visiting bygone places such as Jarman Pontiac, Sterling's Seafood House, The Dizz and the Open House Restaurant. In recent years she wouldn't hesitate to routinely remind folks about Remington before gentrification.
She was preceded in death by her devoted husband Balbino Montanez, beloved sister Harriet, loving brothers George Madison Brown, George Richard Brown, George Booker, Chester Brown, Stephen Brown and Leo Brown.
Her legacy lives on in the lives of her two caring daughters, Barbara Montanez Knox and Bambi Montanez; sisters, Lillian Lawson, Patricia Abraham, Barbara Barnes, Regina Brown, Stephanie Brown, Cheryl Brown and Eileen Brown; brothers, David Brown and Kevin Brown; son-in-law, David Knox; three grandsons, Deonta Johnson, Ellsworth Johnson and Ronald Williams,III; two granddaughters, Montanez Knox and Azaria Hebron; six great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
