Calvin Israel Obituary

CALVIN MALCOM ISRAEL, was born in Rowland, North Carolina on May 3, 1942, son of Archie Lee and Beaulah Mae McRae Israel. As he quietly lived, he quietly went home to be with the Lord on Monday, February 24 at 9:05 pm while surrounded by many family members.

Having been born into a Christian family and brought up in the church, he confessed his faith in Jesus as his savior and was baptized at the Mt. Pelier Presbyterian Church in Rowland, where he remained until moving to Greensboro, North Carolina.

Calvin was educated in the schools of Rowland, graduating from Southside High School in 1960. He was accepted at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University and studied there until he was forced to leave there to work several jobs to help his mother. (He would return to school years later and graduate the same year as his eldest daughter.)

After a few years he moved from Greensboro to Washington, D.C., where he found employment with Lerner Law Book Company and helped his older brother with his vacuum sales company.

He later held several other positions before becoming employed with the Gerber Baby Food Company as a salesman. The knowledge and skills learned at Gerber allowed him to later serve as a Pharmaceutical Sales Representative for Warner-Lambert Company, now known as Pfizer Company, from which he retired in 1999.

In 1968, Calvin met Adele Ruth Alston and their separate paths became one for eternity. On July 4, 1970 in an intimate ceremony with family and close friends, Calvin and Adele became man and wife and began their journey together. Calvin only had eyes for his wife and kept them there for 49 years. He was a solid husband who professed his love for her, provided for her and protected her from any force that would seek to harm her.

This partnership blossomed as they welcomed two daughters, Dawn Obiedell and Jennifer Joy, and years later his boy, the apple of his eye, Calvin Micah, his only grandchild.

Calvin joined his wife at her family church Faith Baptist Church. He was baptized at Faith Baptist on March 13, 1974 and became actively involved in ministry. In 1975, he was appointed to be a Trustee by the late Pastor Walter E. Paige. At the time of his death, he was the longest serving Trustee of the present board and was a mentor for those who began serving years later.

Calvin was preceded in death by three brothers, Samuel lee and his wife, Mae Cattie, James Colon and his wife, Lorine and Noah Vern and his wife, Burnell; one sister, Queen Esther; three brothers-in-love, Lloyd Alston, Sr., Rev. Paul Lewis and Robert Beauford; two sisters-in-love, Claretta A. Green and Virtie J. Alston.

Having lived a life full of faith, family and fidelity, Calvin leaves to cherish wonderful memories, a devoted wife, Adele; two doting daughters; Dawn and Jennifer; one adoring grandson, (aka "his shadow"), Calvin Micah; two brothers, Rev. Archie Sinclair Israel, Sr. (Elaine), Rev. Martin Luther Israel (Webster); brothers-in-love, David Currie, Joseph Earl Alston and Edgar Green, Sr.,; sisters-in-love, Elaine Israel, Webster Israel, Gertrude Lewis and Josephine L. Alston and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
