Bernice Haywood

“To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord” 2 Corinthians 5:8

Bernice Haywood, daughter of the late Dick and Susan Dukes was born on December 14, 1928 in Summerton, South Carolina. She peacefully departed this life on August 21, 2018, with family by her side.

Bernice received her education in Summerton, South Carolina Public Schools. She moved to Baltimore after graduating, and was employed at Saint Joseph’s Hospital until she retired in 1993.

She was married to the late Thomas Haywood and from that union two children were born.

Bernice accepted Christ at an early age, she joined Bethlehem Church of God where she was a devoted member and served on the Usher Board. Later in life she attended Church of the Redeemed of the Lord with her daughter and grandson who were very attentive to all her needs.

 She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Haywood, two brothers, Leon and Albert Dukes and two sisters, Susie Mae Madison and Ruth Brunson.  

Bernice was a peaceful woman who loved the Lord, her family and special friends, Mamie Blanding, Evelyn Gibbs and Claude Street. She was a true prayer warrior, who believed in the power of prayer and knew prayer changes things.

She leaves to cherish her memory: two children, Leon and Arlene Haywood; grandson, Claude (Pooda) as she called him was very dear to her heart; grandchildren, Bryant, Kendrick, Sade, Quianna, Tia and Kia; great grandchildren, Breshay and Logan; two sisters, Mattie and Sarah; three sisters-in-law, Louise, Madeline and Patricia; a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
