Amanda Cunningham Obituary

AMANDA MAE CUNNINGHAM (nee Ervin), daughter of the late Esther Gross, was born on June 6, 1943 in Rockhill, S.C. Amanda was the oldest of three daughters; two preceded her in death, Emma Cureton and Dorothy Greene. After fighting a courageous battle with cancer, Amanda departed this earthly life on July 16, 2019.

Amanda received her education in Rock Hill, South Carolina Public Schools. She received Christ at an early age and became a member of Big Curry Baptist Church in Rock Hill, SC. In 1960, she relocated to Baltimore, MD where she became a member of St. Paul Baptist Church. It was also during this time she met and married the love of her life, the late Anthony T. Cunningham, Sr. From this union came seven children in which two proceeded her in death, Jacqueline M. Cunningham and Rodney W. Cunningham.

Amanda was employed with the Baltimore City Police Department as an office clerk for some time. She later began a career with the Social Security Administration and was there for over 30 years as a claims clerk, until her retirement in 2009.

Amanda was a classy lady with a sophisticated sense of style. She was known for dressing up in her heels and fur. Anyone who knew her knows she loved dancing and her canned Pepsi Soda. She was adventurous and loved to travel to many places, near and far. Not only did she love her own children, she was known as Mama to many others (Tonia, Syreeta and April); always giving loving advice without judgement. She had a special friendship with her hair stylist, Annette, who she just loved to make laugh and to talk with about anything. She even became a mother figure to her nieces and nephews after their parents passed away. Everyone knows that her favorite phrase was, "No,no,no!" and "Listen, Listen!" when trying to get her point across. Amanda was a selfless woman who would always give and never wanted to receive. She found great joy in seeing everyone happy.

She leaves to mourn: three daughters, Vonnie Ervin, Renee (McCormick), Karen (Taylor); two sons, Anthony T. Cunningham, Jr., Michael D. Cunningham; two sons-in-law, Pierre McCormick Sr. and William Taylor IV; Candy Rogers and Laurie Fowler: 25 grandchildren and 32 great grand children; one aunt who raised as her sister, Alice Foster (Bea); one sister-in-law. Margaret Huckstep; one goddaughter, Rochelle Boyer; two bonus daughters, Gwen Washington and Tanya Stokes; an extraordinary niece, Latarsha Anthony; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Special sisterhood/friends Mary McClain, Mildred Lewis, Barbara Edwards, Pearl Sweetwine, Stephanie Street, Stephanie Street, Geraldine Degross and Ann White.
