Abraham Simms

Abraham Simms, son of Robert Simms of Brunswick County Virginia and Minnie Coleman of Greensboro County Virginia, was born on March 19, 1927 in Baltimore, Maryland.  Abraham was preceded in death by his parents, eight siblings and more recently his Wife Lillian. On the morning of September 7, 2018, GOD called Abraham home for eternal rest.

As a child Abraham showed his love for the LORD which was the tradition of his family. Young Abraham received his education in Baltimore City Public Schools.

On December 27, 1946 at the age of 19 he became a “certified” member of the “Faith Baptist Church” where his parents and sibling had been longtime members of the church. During his membership he served as an usher and was helpful when ever called upon.  Even when his illness prevented him from attending services he remained faithful.

Abraham was a Mason. He was honored and retired as a lifelong member of the John Holmes Lodge #89.

 In 1950 He entered the US Army where he served his country until being “honorably” discharged due to an injury that prevented his continued service.

In April 1954 Abraham, who was affectionately known by his family and friends as “POP” married the love of his life “Lillian Cooper”.  Abraham and Lillian’s marriage brought together a wonderful family of eight children who enjoyed many happy days growing up as a family.

As a young man Abraham worked many jobs finally settling in on a career with the Federal Government at the General Services Administration as a Carpenter. Rarely did he miss a day from work. After 40 years of dedicated service he retired from the federal government.

During his career he worked at both Curtis Bay and Fort Meade. He spent the final years of his career in Woodlawn at the Social Security Administration headquarters which is where he retired from.  Always wearing his pleasant smile and friendly greeting, Abraham was widely recognized as the “nicest” guy you would encounter during the course of your day. He was able to draw a smile from even the most unpleasant people!

“POP” was a very dedicated family man, a great husband and father. He didn’t have to do “cleaning” because he had all of us, but he sure could cook!

On holidays especially Christmas and Thanksgiving, he could make the best “Sweet Potato and Coconut Custard pies”. Our home was an “open house” to all our family and friends!

 Pop was also a strong, quiet and deliberate man of few words. Whenever he spoke we would clearly understand exactly what he meant, if you know what I mean. Our father was a loving and giving man. He was inclusive and welcoming to everyone that visited our home. He was always there to help others do things such as painting or fixing things. He was truly a jack-of-all trades. He was a “chauffeur” for people long before UBER even existed, except he did not charge anyone!  All the ladies loved Pop. He was just that special kind of guy that could turn a frown into a smile.

ABRAHAM aka “POP” WILL BE GREATLY MISSED!

Pop leaves to cherish his memories his children: Barbara Jean, Robert (Minnie), Cynthia, Gerald, Ernestine (James), Paulette, Minnie (Troy), and Adrian. He also leaves “17” Grandchildren, “49” Great Grandchildren and “9” Great-Great grandchildren, a host of nieces and nephews, his church family and many friends to celebrate his life.
