Walter “Roy” Poteat Sr. was born on August 8,1939 in Cunningham, North Carolina to the late Never and Clara Poteat. He was affectionately known as "Roy" to his family and friends. Roy peacefully departed this life on July 16, 2026. Roy was educated in the public school systems in North Carolina. He accepted the Lord Jesus Christ at an early age. Roy later migrated to Baltimore, Maryland and married his wife, Sharon Lee Poteat who later preceded him in death.

 Roy was dedicated and a hardworking professional who began his career with Carolina Engineering before the company closed. He continued his career and later retired at TMC Matricciani Company were he proudly served as a Journeyman and Master Plumber. Throughout his career, he earned the respect of colleagues for his exceptional craftsmanship, strong work ethic, and commitment to excellence.

 Blessed with extraordinary mechanical ability and a gifted mind, Roy’s talents extended far beyond his profession. He was strongly skilled in carpentry, welding, masonry, construction and engineering. Known for his ingenuity and resourcefulness, Roy had a remarkable ability to design, build, and repair just about anything. Whether creating innovative gadgets, fabricating one-of-a-kind solutions, or bringing ideas to life with his hands. His creativity, intelligence, and craftmanship will be remembered and admired by all who knew him. Additionally, Roy was always willing to lend a helping hand to family, friends, neighbors, and anyone in need. Whether it was repairing a home, tackling a renovation project, troubleshooting a problem, or building something from scratch, he generously shared his time, talents and expertise without hesitation. He found genuine joy in helping others, never expecting anything in return. 

Roy had a deep love for fishing and proudly earned numerous fishing trophies throughout the years. He also found great satisfaction in gardening each year, raising fresh vegetables to share with family and friends. Roy loved preparing hearty country breakfasts for those he loved. Additionally, he loved to watch westerns and he loved to play his lottery” and definitely won pretty well throughout the years. Roy cherished his family and friends. He loved them deeply, took great pride in their accomplishments, and was always their biggest supporter and encourager. 

Roy leaves to cherish his memory: two daughters Shana Maxwell (Jamel) and Pili Houston, two sons, Walter Jr. and Tygone Sr., one brother Ernest Poteat (Flossie), and two sisters Edith Atkinson (Clifton), Estella Poteat-Okafor. Roy was preceded in death by his parents Never and Clara Poteat, his siblings Amy Jane Poteat, Ruby Poteat-Holt, Willie, George, Fred, and Edward Poteat. Nine grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family and dear friends
