Listen to Obituary

Therman Eugene Gibbs, son of Hazel Gibbs Johnson, was born in Baltimore, Maryland and educated in the Baltimore City Public School System. After graduating from City College high school, he entered the workforce in the area of Real Estate.  He then worked for Rice’s Bakery for 20 years until the late 1980’s, when he began his studies at Morgan State University where he earned a Bachelor of Social Work degree.  Therman matriculated to University of Maryland School of Social Work earning a Master of Social Work degree.

Therman had a distinguished career with the Baltimore City Department of Social Services, Child Welfare Department where he rose to the rank of Unit Chief.   Shortly after earning his Doctorate in Clinical Christian counseling, he began employment with the Baltimore City Public School System as a licensed clinical social worker and therapist.  He retired in 2011 and became a care provider with an adult foster care agency.

Therman loved the performance arts.  He was a cast member with The Arena Players and also performed in many local plays and 2 Broadway productions.  In February 1991, he was the featured actor in a Black History film, “An Honorable Death”, produced and aired on WMAR television.  He was a songwriter and performed with late gospel greats Clara Ward, Alex Bradford and Rev. James Cleveland.  He was also a songwriter, soloist and recorded with the New Refuge Deliverance Choir.

Therman submitted his life to Christ in his youth and attended the Life Auditorium Church for many years before joining Refuge Deliverance Temple under the pastorage of Bishop Naomi Durant.  In the late 1980’s, Therman joined the First Apostolic Faith Church where he remained until his death.

Brother Gibbs was part of the First Apostolic Men’s fellowship, a member of the Pew Rally Committee under the leadership of the late Bro. Matthew Robinson, served as a GED instructor in the Apostolic Adult Learning Center, was a clinical consultant to the East Harbor Counseling Center and was a faithful member of the Early Morning Worship Service Praise Team until late 2016 when illness prevented him from attending services.

Often viewed as quiet and unassuming, Therman operated in the gift of helps and provided behind the scene support to many people, especially college students who he assisted to purchase books and pay tuition.  He was also a therapeutic foster parent who provided a safe, nurturing home to needy children and disabled adults.

Though no longer physically present, those Therman leave behind rejoice in knowing that he is now resting with his Lord and Savior.

He leaves to mourn his passing his mother, Mrs. Hazel Gibbs Johnson his uncle Mr. Harvey Lowery and a host of friends.
