Listen to Obituary

Shirley Booker Smith, daughter of the late Fannie Atkinson Booker and Hobert Booker was born on July 25, 1949, in Baltimore, Maryland. She departed this life on October 15, 2022, after battling Cancer.

Shirley attended & received her education from the Baltimore City Public Schools.

Shirley had a baby boy named Kevin Darnell Booker prior to her meeting and marrying Melvin Smith in 1968. From this union their daughter Melvina Smith was born. Years later Shirley met her significant other Eugene Robinson and from this bond, their daughter Erica Robinson was born.

Shirley loved to care for people, so she was attracted to jobs that allowed her to do just that. She worked as a Nursing Assistant, worked at City Hospital, and ultimately became the Day Care provider for family & friends alike.

She really enjoyed taking care of her family, keeping them close kept her happy.

Shirley’s favorite pastime was to sit on the steps, drink coke soda, eat fried chicken, listen & sing her oldie but goodies. The 2500 block of McElderry Street was where she spent the last 20 years of her life…she was affectionately known as Aunt Shirley to the entire block.

Shirley had a big heart & and was very giving, it was nothing for her to cook meals and feed the block at Christmas, Thanksgiving or on any given day. She never liked to turn a person down.

Shirley's grands and great grandchildren brought so much joy to her heart, from just holding them at the beginning of their lives to watching them take first steps in life to having daily conversations with each one. Shirley was someone her grandbabies could depend on for a laugh, a hug or just some good old advice whether from the kitchen table or the front steps. She was always a phone call away.

Shirley was preceded in death by her husband Melvin Smith; two sisters Margaret Atkinson & Eloise Booker; two sister-n-Laws Shirley James & Lena Lackland; two brothers Joseph Booker, and William Solo Booker; one Brother-n-Law Charles Conyers and her best friend Geneva.

She leaves to cherish her memory, her significant other Eugene Robinson; her three loving children Kevin Darnell Booker, Melvina Smith, and Erica Robinson; seven grandkids Michael, LaKeisha, NaKiya, Darnetta, Charnell, Jayquan & Jayona; nine great grand kids, Tarshaya, Jadah, Malik, Kenyon, Jayceon, Dakota, Sahana, Alex & Journie; Her sisters Brenda Booker Conyers and Francine Booker; one Sister-n-Law Flora Denise Booker; two Brother-n-Laws Reginald Harrington & Edward Johnson. Shirley also leaves to mourn, four godchildren Junior, Von, Kevin & Michael along with a favorite cousin/best friend Dobbie, and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins & a host of close friends.

Shirley’s big heart led her to adopt a host of friends and to consider them as family. These individuals include Bridget, Gwen, Mary, Libby, April, Gloria, Jeffrey, Darlene, Dee, and the entire 2500 block of McElderry Street.
