Sandra Marie McLaurin, daughter of the later Lemar and Mary C. McLaurin, was born in Baltimore, Maryland, on January 27, 1948. She departed this life on February 22, 2023, after a lengthy illness.
She received her education in the Baltimore City Public School system. After graduating high school, she became employed at Steel and Tin. She later found employment at Mocraft, where she worked until becoming ill.
Sandra received Christ at Greater Gethsemane Missionary Baptist Church and became a devoted choir member under the leadership of Rev. Thomas. She loved congregating with her church family and doing church activities.
Syree, as she was affectionately known, loved baking, cooking, sewing, shopping, and the casinos. If she was not out shopping or hanging with family and friends, you could find her in the kitchen baking her sumptuous strawberry shortcake or her marvelous pineapple upside-down cake. She made numerous friends wherever she went and would lavish them with her cooking. She will sincerely be missed by everyone who knows her.
Syree’s house, “The Big House,” was the gathering spot for her family. Whether it be a cookout, block party, Thanksgiving, Christmas, or just because, you could always find family and friends at “The Big House” for food and entertainment. Syree’s laughter was contagious; she enjoyed making jokes and would unapologetically speak her mind regardless of who liked it or not. Syree had a big heart and opened her home to many over the years. Even after becoming ill, Syree’s spirit remained high as she brought amusement all around her.
Sandra was preceded in death by her sister Carolyn McLaurin, son Isaac Paul Wright, grandson Keith Lovelace, son-in-law Rodney Johnson and brother-in-law Edward “Harold” Webb.
She leaves to cherish her memory 2 daughters, Delores Renee McLaurin-Hawkins (son-in-law James Hawkins), and Theresa Wright-Johnson, 1 daughter-in-law Shannon Wright, 2 granddaughters Rekia Lovelace and Jasmine Hawkins, 2 grandsons Terry Marks Jr. and Rashod Johnson, 6 great-grandkids Ashanti, Kayla, Aden, Nasir, Logan, and Mariah. Syree also leaves 2 brothers, Lamar McLaurin and Allen McLaurin (sister-in-law Theresa McLaurin), 3 sisters, Barbara Ann Webb, Brenda McLaurin, and Patricia Thacker (brother-in-law Nathaniel Thacker), 9 nieces, 9 nephews, and a host of great nieces, great nephews, other relatives, and friends.
