Ruth Ernestine (Batten) Matthews daughter of the late Ruth (Bowser) Edmonds, and the late Wille Batten, was born on April 07, 1940, in Baltimore Maryland. Ruth, also known as (Teenie) was the youngest of three other siblings, the late Ernest L, Batten Sr., Mary L. (Batten) Toomer, and Lille Streams. 

Ruth was educated in the Baltimore Public School System.

Ruth met a US sailor by the name of Donald Ray Matthews in the 1950’s. Ruth and the late Donald Matthews were married in 1957. From this union they had five children, Adrain, Maurice, Davenia, Kelvis and Samanthia Matthews.

 Ruth and Donald moved to Winston Salem NorthCarolina. The three youngest children Donald and Ruth were born in North Carolina. 

While in North Carolina Ruth began working in a furniture factory, and Donald did Custodial work in a few schools, and businesses.

 Ruth upon one of her visits back Baltimore, ending up going back to North Carolina accompanied with her nephew/Son (Anthony Deigo Batten), to help with taking care of the other children, while Donald and Ruth worked. Ruth and her children eventually moved back to Baltimore.

 While back in Baltimore, Ruth became a certified Nursing Assistant and began a long career at Mercy Hospital.

While back in Baltimore, Ruth became Acquainted with the late Joesph Coates (Army Vet and Guitarist). From the Union of Ruth and Joe, the birth of a musical group was born, (The Young Generators). That group consisted of Ruth’s five children and Ruth’s nephew. Ruth and Joesph remained together until Joe’s untimely death in 2010.

Ruth leaves behind to mourn/ celebrate her journey to be with our Lord, her children Adrain, Maurice, Davenia, Kelvis, Samanthia and Deigo/nephew Aaron Toomer, grandchildren, Naquita, and Chiquaya Matthews, Latrice and David Leach, Marceodae Matthews, and a host of great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and a few great, great grandchildren
