Listen to Obituary

RUTH LEOMIA EDWARDS, beloved daughter of the late Charles L. & Margaret L. Roundtree was born on December 2, 1932. God called her home to victory on June 13, 2020.

“Ruthie” as she was affectionately called, was born in Ayden, North Carolina. At the age of 2, her family moved to Baltimore, Maryland. She received her education in the Baltimore City Public School System, receiving her GED at Dunbar Senior High School.

Ruthie met William Edwards. They fell in love and married. Ruthie had three daughters.

Ruthie loved to sing, had a beautiful voice and at one point thought of pursuing a singing career with the Cardinals. (Her mother put an end to that real quick, though.) She worked throughout her life. Her first job was at the Lord Baltimore Hotel. She left there real quick and would make you laugh telling the story about how the actor, John Carrandine caused her to flee her duties when dressed as a vampire he came out of his room, with that cape flowing out behind him - down the hall, scaring her to death. She never went back to that job! She then went to work at Johns Hopkins Hospital. Leaving there, she went to work at Stewart’s Department Store but soon left and returned to Johns Hopkins where she remained for 22 years until retirement.

Ruthie was brought up in a Christian home. From childhood she attended church regularly and was baptized at a young age. Her service to God continued into adulthood. Later in life, Ruthie rededicated her life to the Lord. Her passion for God was renewed at United Baptist Church where she was baptized again. This fire for the Lord was ignited under the leadership and teaching of Dr. Carl J. Solomon. She remained a faithful member there until the Lord called her home.

Preceding her in death were 2 daughters, Mrs. Janet Stewart and Mrs. Sheila Walker, one son-in-law, Mr. Calvin Williams, Sr., her brother and sister-in-law Charles and Mattie Roundtree.

As a reflection of her life, Ruthie will be lovingly remembered by her daughter Mrs. Denise Williams, son in-laws Otis Walker and Roger Stewart; four grandchildren, Kelley Jones (Paul), Eric Stewart (Wanda), Calvin Williams, Jr., (Tanisha) and Torrey Williams (LaToya); twelve great-grandchildren, Myeisha, Maranda, Paull II, Ashley, Giselle, Erica, Christopher, Charles, Eric, Jr., Kendall, Darnell and Thomas; six nieces, Connie, Laverne, Lorraine, Yasmeen, Melony and Linda; three close friends, Lycina Brothers, Francis Tibbs and Grace Washington and a host of other relatives and friends including her United Baptist Church family.
