RUBIN MCCLAIN was born on May 18/, 1945. To the late Pauline Fair and George McClain in Baltimore, Maryland. Affectionately known as "Boo" Rubin was the eldest of 13 children and held a special relationship with each of his siblings. He led with wisdom, loyalty, and love-qualities that shaped not only his family but all who knew him. His presence anchored the family, and his influence helped shape the strong foundation on which their bond was built.
He received his early education through the Baltimore City Public School System. After graduating from High School, Rubin proudly served in the United States Army. Following his military service, he pursued higher education with unwavering determination. In 1972, he earned his associate of arts degree from Baltimore Community College. He went on to receive a bachelor of science degree from Morgan State University in 1974. Committed to lifelong learning, Rubin later earned his Master's Degree from Bowie State University in 1993 and achieved his doctorate (PH.D.) from Berne University in 1999.
Throughout his life, Rubin held a variety of professional roles, but his deepest fulfillment came from teaching. Education wasn't just a career for him-it was a calling. Whether standing in front of a classroom or offering wisdom in everyday conversations. Rubin believed in teaching as a way to uplift others and leave a lasting impact. He also spent time working for Domino Sugar and later served in leadership roles that reflected his dedication to community.
Rubin was a man deeply rooted in fellowship, leadership and legacy. He was a proud and active member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., where he was affectionately known by his line name, "Diddy". he served with distinction as the exalted ruler of the East Baltimore Elks Lodge #1043. Rubin's leadership and loyalty left as unforgettable mark on every life he touched.
Rubin made sure his family understood the value of hard work, pride and staying grounded. He poured himself into his children.
he leaves behind a proud and enduring legacy through his sons, Rubin D. (Charlie), Kevin C. (Lil Rubin) and Branden each a reflection of his strength, resilience and the unwavering pride he carried as a father. Alongside them his daughter-in-law, Arnnita wife of Rubin D. He also shared a special bond with his dear friend Day-Day, who was always just a call away. Daughters, Carol, Angela and Ann, were the heartbeat of his world. Carol shared an especially close bond with her father, marked by steadfast devotion and a deep, unspoken understanding that only the two of them truly knew. Rubin legacy continues through a loving multitude of grandchildren and great-grand children.
Rubin was welcomed into eternity by his beloved wife, Carolyn McClain the love of his life, whose strength and grace carried her through a courageous battle with cancer. Their bond was rare-rooted in deep friendship, unwavering devotion, and a love that never wavered through life's highs and lows. They are reunited- side by side once more, in perfect peace. He also reunites with his eldest daughter, Yvonna LaVetta McClain, Rubin was preceded in death by his sisters, Carrie Bailey, Carol Paisley and Renita Fair; brothers, Joseph McClain, Alfred Matthews, Gregory Matthews, Dennis Matthews, William Fair and Edwin Matthews; his cousin, Alfreda Venable, with whom he shared a special bond.
Rubin was the heart of his family- the center of its rhythm, its laughter and its lessons. He led with a voice that carried wisdom, humor and bold truth, never ,missing a chance to teach, uplift, or correct-whether you were ready or not. His presence was both comforting and commanding.
Rubin is lovingly survived by his sisters, Amelia "Candy" Jones (Thomas Jones), Michonne Smith and Rochonne Fair; brother, Michael McClain (Adrienne McClain). Michael was his confidant, closest companion and a true partner through every chapter of life. He also leaves three loving sisters-in-law, Portia McClain, Adrienne McClain and Joyce Coates.
Rubin also shared a special and enduring relationship with his longtime partner, Valerie Boyd, through the years. Valarie and Rubin was blessed with two loving daughters, Cheila and Japera, who became a part of his heart and family, along with a host of beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren. This extended family was a testament to Rubin's capacity to love, to lead and to create lasting bonds wherever he went.
