Listen to Obituary

Roosevelt Parker was born in Nottoway County, Virginia November 5, 1932, son of the late Charlie and Annie Hawkes Parker. As he gently lived, he quietly went home to be with the Lord on Monday, September 7, 2020 at the side of his wife of 61 years, Lucille. Having been born in a Christian family and brought up in the church,

Roosevelt confessed his faith in Jesus as his Savior and Lord at a tender age and was baptized at Cellar Creek Baptist Church in Blackstone, Virginia. Roosevelt graduated from Luther H. Foster High School in Nottoway, Virginia in 1952. He went on to serve in the United States Army from 1953 until 1955.

After receiving an honorable discharge from the military, he attended Virginia State College from 1955-1956. After moving to Baltimore, Maryland, on July 26, 1958 Roosevelt was joined in holy matrimony to Lucille Mildred Elam. In January 1962, Roosevelt began a 30-year 6-month career working at the General Motors Bus and Truck Division until his retirement in July 1992.

Roosevelt, was affectionately referred to as Pop Pop by his family. He was a loyal husband, a great provider, a loving father and grandfather. He loved to fish, hunt and work on his tractor and his 1992 Chevrolet truck. Pop Pop enjoyed cooking and eating with his family and he was known to be one the best Chefs in town. Pop Pop and Nana enjoyed traveling together to the various church conventions, conferences and revivals to fellowship. Pop Pop was a faithful caregiver for his wife Lucille until his health began to fail Mr. Parker joined Faith Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Dr. Walter E. Paige. There he taught by example what it meant to possess Christian character, attire and decorum. He understood that the way you presented yourself is the way that you gained respect from people. On September 28, 1977, Roosevelt was ordained as a Deacon under the leadership of the late Dr. Walter E. Paige. He served as a Deacon for over 40 years until his health failed. He was often sought out as an advisor, counselor and mentor to younger Deacons in the Church. He was a faithful, active, dedicated and committed member of the church: Baptist Training Union, Men’s Ministry, Sunday School, Liaison Panel, Children’s Ministry Advocate, Golden Age Club, Layman’s Ministry, Scholarship Fund, Counseling Ministry. Evangelism Ministry and Women’s League Ministry. Most importantly, Deacon Parker served as the Chairman of the Deacon Board for over fifteen years. After the passing of the late Dr. Paige, Deacon Parker became the Officer in Charge leading the congregation in a stellar fashion. Deacon Parker was instrumental in the calling of the new pastor, Dr. Greggory R. Maddox, to Faith Baptist Church.

Roosevelt “Pop Pop” leaves to share his memories his wife of 61 years, Lucille Mildred Parker, two sons David (Judy) and Derek (Sharon). Four grandchildren Deidre, Danielle (Erique), Derek, Jr. and David Brandon. Two great granddaughters Samaiya and Eryka. He also leaves a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, cousins, and friends to cherish his memories. All of Roosevelt sisters Rosa Parker, Catherine Mosses, Corlene Scott, Lucinda Overby and brothers James Parker and Branch Parker preceded him in death.
