Romaine Elizabeth Scruggs was born December 8, 1943, in Baltimore, Maryland. She was the youngest daughter of the late John Robert & Pauline Curley. She departed this life on April 22, 2024 after a brief illness and a courageous battle with Leukemia.
Known affectionately as Romaine, Maine or mom by many. But she was originally named Romaine Elizabeth Curley by her sister Shirley. Shirley named her after elementary school principal at 113 Elementary whom Shirley adored and loved.
Romaine attended Baltimore City Schools. She worked for Loyola College for more than 20 years until retired and received several awards for outstanding service.
At an early age Romaine professed her faith in Christ at Faith Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. Simon Williams. She had a dream of becoming an usher at the age of 16 which inspired her to joined the Young Adult Usher Ministry. After leaving Faith Baptist in 1970 she joined the Ebenezer Baptist Church. She was recruited by Maggie Allen as a Senior Usher and continued her service until her illness prevented her. She held the positions of president and Vice president. She also participated in the Leadership Class, 115 year Anniversary Hospitality Committee, Pastors Aide, Willing Workers and Kitchen Committee. In her dream she envisioned herself standing in the back of the church and someone gave her a white garment. Well mom you now have your white garment in heaven!!! She enjoyed ushering in her church and around the city for other churches when they needed extra help for funerals and other services.
Romaine was blessed and chosen to be the mother 6 children, One daughter Cheri Ames and 5 sons Keith Scruggs, Michael Nolan Anderson, (Richard Scruggs Jr.; Kevin Scruggs and Terrance Scruggs ) who proceeded her in death.
She loved her children and faithfully sent them to Ebenezer every Sunday to participate in Sunday School, BTU and to sing on the choirs. Romaine helped raise many children on Brentwood and babysat many of them too. They continue to this day to call her mom. Her greatest gift was to feed the community and her neighbors. She really loved her next door Shirley Davis who she adopted as her daughter. Shirley was her road partner. They went to three or four stores a day. Thank you Shirley!
Romaine loved her sisters (Shirley, Carolyn and Constance) and talked to them daily but at night she loved to talk to her cousin Gail Williams. She loved to serve and would pack up food from her own kitchen to feed the homeless and her neighbors because she lived on Brentwood for 80 years. Her motto was I won’t complain.
She leaves to celebrate her life and cherish her memories ; one devoted daughter Cheri Ames; two sons Keith Scruggs (Rachelle) ; Michael Nolan Anderson (Wendy) seven grandchildren, eighteen great grandchildren, three sisters Shirley Robinson, Carolyn Hunter & Constance Perry, nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephew, adopted daughters Shirley Davis and Nettie, cousins, friends and Ebenezer Usher Board.
