Roma Mildred Miles, the daughter of the late John Paul and Virginia Jones was born on November 28, 1947 in Baltimore, Maryland. Roma a woman of strength fought a good fight, but God saw that the road was getting rough and the hills were getting harder to climb; he quietly called her to home to eternal rest on Sunday, August 9, 2020.
Roma, her big sister Constance whom they called Connie and her big brother Paul lost their mother when Roma was just 5 years old. Both Connie and Paul preceded Roma in death. Roma would often say, some of the best and most fun years of her life was when she lived in Lafayette Courts Projects. Roma and her siblings were raised by their father John and their grandmother Constance whom they called Patsy. As a young child Roma and her siblings often went to church with their grandmother Patsy. It was going to church with her grandmother that led Roma to accept Jesus Christ as her personal Savior at a young age. Two more siblings John (Skippy) Jones who preceded her in death and Marsha Jones were later born and Roma finally had the opportunity to become a big sister. Growing up Roma was crazy about her siblings. Many would say her brother Paul often got into fights ‘thanks’ to Roma.
Roma received her formal education in Baltimore City Public Schools. She attended Dunbar High School.
In 1971 Roma married her childhood friend and love Walter Nathaniel Gibson. Roma and Nathaniel or Thaniel as she called him were married for 27 years until his death in 1999. To find true love a second time around is a blessing and Roma was afforded that blessing. Roma found love again and married Tony Alexander Miles on October 19, 2001. Roma and Tony enjoyed years of love and joy together until his death in 2008. Roma and Tony loved to travel, go out to dinner, host family gatherings, and just having a joyous time with all who knew and loved them. Though Roma had no children of her own, she loved her nieces and nephews and she gained seven stepchildren when she united in marriage with Tony.
Roma possessed a strong work ethic which she learned from her father and grandmother. She worked for Baltimore City Public Schools and London Fog. On May 1, 1974 Roma gained employment with Anne Arundel County Schools where she worked for 31 years until her retirement on October 1, 2005. During those 31 years she worked at Marley Elementary School, where the staff and children loved her.
Roma was a true woman of class and sophistication. Her love for fashion was undisputable and she always topped her outfit off with a pair of sunglasses. Her laughter was distinctive and infectious. Everyone knew Roma had arrived once they heard her laughter. She was a real jokester with a witty since of humor and she loved to tell stories about her family. Roma’s love for cooking was inherited from her grandmother Patsy, along with her love of fashion and home decorating. Roma was a Lady of Elegance, all who knew her loved her.
During her final days, her devoted nieces and nephews Tyrone, Teresa, Towanda, Kim, Paul, LaTarsa and stepdaughter Gabrielle cared for her until she transitioned to her eternal resting place in the Master’s arms.
Roma leaves to cherish fond memories; her sister Marsha Jones; seven step-children; six sisters-in-law Barbara Jones, Martha Jones, Joanne Stewart, Elaine Barber, Cora Brady and Virginia Miles; three brothers-in-law, George Jackson, James Curtis and Eric Miles, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, step-grandchildren and friends.
I delight greatly in the Lord; my soul rejoices with God. Isaiah 61:10
