The season of our beloved, Robert Lee Wright, began on November 15, 1940 in Varnville SC. Robert was born to the late Lee Wright of Claxton Ga., and the late Mary Aletha Wright of Varnville, SC.
Robert exchanged this life for his eternal reward on December 12, 2021. Robert was 1 of 5 children created from the union of Lee and Mary Wright. His siblings consist of 3 Brothers, Lucius (Bobby) Wright, the late Ernest (Ike) Nix, the late William J. Nix (Willie), and 1 Sister, Edith Wright Mackall.
Robert remained in South Carolina until the age of 4. His family then relocated to Baltimore MD in the early 40’s. He began his early childhood education at P.S 125 Elementary School followed by Booker T. Washington Junior High School, graduating from Carver Vocational Technical High School, majoring in Masonry.
Following his high school graduation, Robert went on to join the U.S Military. Serving in the United States Army.
While serving in the U.S Army Robert met Jeanette G. Peterson. They became very close friends which flourished into a loving Marriage on November 19, 1963 after his stint in the Army.
This marriage resulted in 5 beautiful children. The late Robert L. Wright Jr. (Terry), Gregory P. Wright (Greg), the late William L. Wright (Lonnie), Mary M. Wright (Marcy), and the late Draketina E. Wright (Tina).
Robert was preceded in death by his parents, Lee & Mary Wright; his beloved wife, Jeanette G. Wright; two sons, Robert L. Wright Jr, and William L. Wright; one daughter, Draketina E. Wright; two brothers, Ernest I. Nix, and William J. Nix and his grandson Rashard O. Wright.
He leaves to cherish his memory, 3 loving children, Gregory P. Wright, Mary M. Wright, and Beverly Wright; 1 Sister, Edith Wright, and 1 brother Luicus Wright; his daughter in-law Nanette Wright; 9 Grandchildren, Monnie Wright, Lakeisha Jernagan, Lashea Betters, Latera Sheppard, Kim Wright, Gregory P. Wright Jr., Sharita Taylor, Trey Randel, and Nelson Ellis; 5 great grandchildren, Jerald Jernagan, Juliette Jernagan, Usman Ly, Kyrie Wright, and Royal Wright, and a host of nieces, nephews, and loved ones.
Robert was an extremely hard-working man. Everything he did, he gave his all. He may have started off selling African American newspapers, and jet magazines, washing floors, and scrubbing marble stone steps in his neighborhood, but over the years, he became an entrepreneur and businessman owning and operating multiple businesses, from his food carryout, to his very own construction company and much more. He was a true protector and provider of his family. Robert was funny, at least he would laugh, he didn’t mind if you didn’t. He always had a “joke” ready for whoever was coming his way. At the same time, Robert was very sharp and conservative. His presence was felt but rarely heard. He could come into a room and you wouldn’t even know he was there. He enjoyed doing work on his home, spending time with his brothers and sisters, eating home cooked meals, and could sit and watch western series all day. Some of his favorite foods included crab cakes, southern style soul food, and ANYTHING sweet. Robert would help his family, friends, coworkers, associates, and even strangers. I am certain that each person here today has a special memory with Robert. So for every life that he’s touched, may the memories we’ve shared with Robert live and not die!
