Richard J. Carter Sr.

Richard James Carter, Sr was born February 11, 1951 to the late Betsy Thornton-Carter and Joseph Carter in Farmville, Virginia.

He departed this life on July 16, 2020.

As a boy, Richard moved to Baltimore, Maryland with his family. He continued his education in the Baltimore City School System and graduated from Paul Laurence Dunbar High School in 1969. As an adult, Richard became a long-time employee of Holly Poultry, where he worked as a butcher for over 30 years until his retirement in 2012.

Richard was married to the love of his life, Deborah for over 37 years. They shared four children; Antonio, Takisha, Richard, Jr., and Ashley. Richard loved and cherished his family and wanted to make sure that they would always stick together.

Richard was loved by many and made a lasting impression on all who knew him. He was affectionately known as “Mr. Richie”, “Big Rich”, “Unc” and famously “Grandpop” or “Pop Pop” by many who came to know and love him. Richard was loving, caring, and always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. He enjoyed daily walks and could often be spotted walking around the city. Sometimes, friends and family would see him walking and would offer him a ride to his destination. He would always answer, “No, I’m ok...I’m only going up the street!” What they didn’t know is that his destination very well may have been miles away; he would walk from east Baltimore to west Baltimore without hesitation. Yes, Richard loved to walk, but his greatest joy was fulfilled by taking his “grands” on bus ride excursions across Baltimore. He would make a simple ride on the city bus seem like the journey of a lifetime!

Family was everything to Richard and he would make everyone laugh at all the family gatherings. He loved to laugh, but he also loved to eat; if your cooking wasn’t good, he would just wrap up his plate and say, “I’ll eat it later” (with a laugh). Richard was a gentle soul with a heart of gold who left his mark on us all.

Richard was preceded in death by his mother, Betsy Thornton-Carter, his father Joseph Cater, one sister and two brothers Dorothy, Anthony, and Joseph Carter; brother in law, Reginald Allen; sister-in law, Patricia Allen.

Richard leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife, Deborah Carter; four children, Antonio (wife Angela), Takisha, Richard, Jr. (devoted companion, Delana Eaton) and Ashley Carter (devoted companion, Michael Cox); seven grandchildren, Imani, Richard III, ShaLontay, Dajah, Anthony, Ashad, and Haiden; two great-grandchildren, Marley and Blake; four brothers-in-law,James Allen, Alvin Allen, Daniel Allen, and Steven Allen; four sisters-in-law, Colleen Allen, Michelle Allen, Nina Allen, and Lillian Allen; a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends, and three honorary grandchildren, McKinley, Dayonna, and Dayonte.
