Raymond McCoy was born on May 18, 1932 in
Appomattox County, Virginia. His parents were the late John and Jessie McCoy. Raymond was one of nine children born to the union. Raymond received his education in the Appomattox County School
System.
Raymond accepted Christ and was baptized at the age of 12 in the Mt. Airy Baptist Church in Appomattox County. He remained dedicated to
his faith throughout his life.
Raymond and the late Vivian Clark were married on June 23, 1957. Raymond joined Vivian as a member of Memorial Baptist Church. Together they dedicated theirs lives in Christian service as lifelong members of Memorial Baptist Church. Raymond was an extremely active member serving as both a Trustee, and Chairman of the Deacon
Board for over 20 years.
Raymond was employed at Bethlehem Steel for 5 years then went on to start his own lucrative trucking company. He was the owner and operator of his business until his retirement in 2008.
When Raymond and Vivian met it was love at first sight. Raymond was working at his brother’s gas station on Preston Street when he encountered the lovely young Vivian Clark. Vivian would walk daily to the Crown Market just across the street from the gas station. The two love birds would talk often and soon fell in love. Following a
short engagement, they were happily married. Raymond never spent a night away from his beloved Vivian except for once. They never had children of their own, but were the cheerful God parents to Vanessa McCoy, Russell Keene and several other cherished family members and friends.
Raymond will be remembered for his leadership, selfless generosity, his deep abiding sense of community, and his love for his church. Raymond held his beloved Pastor Calvin Keene in especially high esteem, and felt honored to
work beside him, the deacons, and the members of Memorial Baptist Church both young and old. Above all Raymond will be remembered as a loving and devoted husband to his Vivian, a wonderful brother to his siblings, and a caring neighbor to all. He was the embodiment of the Christian virtue” love thy neighbor as thy self ”.
