QUEEN ESTER NEAL HORTON, affectionately known as "Ma", was the daughter of the late William Clyde Neal Sr. and Octavia Powell Neal. Queen was born on August 13, 1925, in Wake county, NC. She was the third of twelve children from this loving union and the second oldest daughter. She was married to the late William Askew Horton Sr. Queen gained her wings and entered her eternal rest on July 30, 2022.
Queen received her education at Gethsemane Christian SDA Junior Academy in Raleigh, North Carolina. She held numerous jobs but her favorite job was raising her kids, grandkids and great-grandkids.
Queen had a heart of gold, she willingly helped anyone she loved. To know her was to love her. She was the Matriarch of the family. Everyone loved coming to "Ma" house; it was like their second home. Queen loved to watch Soap Opera's, Matlock, Westerns, Court Shows and The Price is Right. She loved siting in her rocking chair and telling the family old stories about her hometown.
Queen was passionate about cooking and everyone loved her food, especially her fried chicken, potato salad, collard greens, and her famous sweet potato pies. She fed whoever came through her door and none was ever hungry in her house.
Sweet, loving, caring and also feisty, Ma was full of life, love, and laughter. She had a sharp tongue and a mouth of fire that would get you together real quick. She carried her name Queen with so much grace and style. She loved her hats along with a matching purse, and let's not forget her jewelry and her famous pearls. Ma will forever be our "Queen:.
Queen was met in heaven by her parents, William Clyde Neal Sr. and Octavia Powell Neal, husband William Askew Horton Sr., son William Askew Horton Jr.; grandson, Dexter Horton Jr.; sister's, Mary Neal and Pattie Neal Rogers,; brothers, Robert Neal, William Clyde Neal Jr., Douglas Neal, Glendo Neal, Brooke Neal and James Neal and a host of other relatives and friends.
She leaves to cherish her memory, two sons, Alphonsus Horton and Dexter Horton Sr.; two daughters, Deborah Horton and Gloria Horton; brother, Theartic Neal; two grandchildren, Cheryl Jones and Lawrence Horton; twelve, great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren, in addition to nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of other relatives and friends.
