On June 12, 1954, Nellie Chew-Johnson, affectionately known as Bay, was born in Baltimore, Maryland, to the late Dennis Chew Sr. and Nellie Chew Beattie. After a brief time in the hospital, Bay peacefully transitioned into eternal rest and was welcomed into the loving presence of the Lord on March 14, 2026.
Bay graduated from Eastern High School, in Baltimore, Maryland and later earned a degree in Accounting, from Community College of Baltimore. Throughout her early career, she held various accounting positions that ultimately led to obtaining the positions as Operational Manager in the West Side Shopping Center Jackson Hewitt Tax Services office. Faithfully serving as a Operations Manager for eigheen years before retiring, to devote her time and energy to what she loved most her family. She was truly a mother to many and spent her retirement years caring for and supporting numerous family members with love and compassion.
Bay was raised in a loving home, where faith and compassion were the foundation of her life. She carried that love with her always, sharing it freely and deeply with everyone she encountered. To know and experience her love was truly a blessing from God. Bay had a gentle and sweet spirit, and her kindness drew people to her. She will be deeply missed, and her loving presence will continue to be felt as we cherish and honor her memory.
Left to carry on her legacy of love are her goddaughter, Natasha Duncan; stepchildren, Monika and Carl Johnson Jr.; sisters, Maxine Chew-Williams and Janet Lawson; brother, Dwight Chew; sisters-in-love, Deborah, Gwynn, and Linda; brothers-in-love, John, Robert, Gregory, Nat, and Enoch; all of Bay-Bay’s children, nieces, nephews, and those she lovingly raised, and a host of cherished family members and dear friends.
Welcoming her home in eternal rest were her parents, Dennis Chew Sr. and Nellie Chew Beattie; her beloved husband, Carl Johnson Sr.; her sisters, Lorraine Chew and Virginia Chew-Clarke; and her brothers, Frances, Dennis, and Dean Chew.
