Naomi Phillips, affectionately known as “Nanny” to the late Benjamin and Geneva Macklin Phillips, was born January 14, 1929. She was the seventh of ten children and blessed to have a twin sister (Mary Ruth) share the womb with her. Nanny transitioned to her heavenly home on Thursday, February 16, 2023

Nanny grew up in North Carolina. After graduating from high school, she attended beauty school in Charlotte, North Carolina. Nanny later moved to Baltimore and was employed by Provident Hospital for over 19 years as a Central Supply Tech.  When Provident Hospital closed, Nanny became employed with Johns Hopkins Hospital until her retirement in 1992.

Nanny joined First Baptist Church of Caroline Street, Baltimore, Maryland in 1971 and was baptized by Rev. Baxter Matthews. She served on the Senior Usher Board under the leadership of the late Helen Booker. She was the secretary of the Senior Usher Board for 12 years. Nanny also served as vice president of the Senior Usher Board under the leadership of the late Catherine L. Harrison. In 2000, after the passing of Catherine, Nanny was elected president of the Senior Ushers and held that position for five years. She was also a member of the First Baptist Relief under the leadership of the late Melvin Davis.

Nanny loved cooking her down home southern meals for family and friends. She would always say, “Your eyes is bigger than your belly.” Nanny really loved reading her bible. Her favorite scripture was the 23rd Psalm. Nanny’s favorite songs were “Solid Rock”, “Tis so sweet to trust in Jesus”, “It Is Well with My Soul” and “Blessed Assurance”, just to name but a few.

Nanny was preceded in death by her nine siblings Benjamin Jr., Eugene Sr., Joshua, William, Matthew, Alice, Mattie, Mary Ruth (her twin) and George. She leaves to carry on her legacy daughter Regina Green (Derrick); four grandchildren, Rodney (Rebecca) of Fayetteville, NC, Raven, Andre’ (Lisa), and Tiffany; nine great-grandchildren Zakiyyah ‘Amber’, Roman, Marcus, Jaden, Mya, Kingston, Christopher, Sophia, Liam and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
