MOZELLE E. SMITH, daughter of the late Daniel Hughes and Edith Estelle Dennis, was born February 1, 1944 in Gloucester County, Virginia. She responded to her call to eternal rest Thursday morning, February 22, 2024 after a lengthy illness.
Mozelle graduated from Thomas C. Walker High School located in Virginia, in 1962. Desiring to further her education, she enrolled in what was then Morgan State College. She received her Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1982 and her MBA from Morgan in 1986.
On March 20, 1965, Mozelle married Emanuel Smith, Jr. From this union, three children were born; Andre K. Smith, Deborah E. Smith-Pilson and Daryl R. Smith, Sr. (Decease).
Seeking a better life for themselves, Mozelle and Emanuel relocated to Baltimore, Maryland in 1966.
Mozelle's employment history included the position of bank teller for the former Equitable Trust Bank located at Northwood Shopping Center. In 1973, she began employment at Morgan State University where she remained until 2007. Her last position there was Assistant Registrar for the Records and Registration Department.
Mozelle committed her life to Christ at an early age. She was a member of Southern Baptist Church for many years. Mozelle thought it not robbery to support her church by serving and exercising her gifts. She sang on the former Senior Choir #2. She loved the Lord and was committed to studying His Word. Mozelle attended Sunday School regularly, Southern's former Churchwide Institute, as well as the State Wide Institutes of the United Baptist Missionary Convention of Maryland, Inc. She often seized the opportunity to witness to others about Jesus Christ, especially as a New Member's Counselor. She also attended Southern's former Friday Night Prayer Meetings.
Mozelle served on many annual day committees; too many to cite, but a memorable one was when she served as secretary for Southern's 1977 Mortgage Burning Committee. Finally, she recognized the importance of making Southern's visiting guests feel welcome. Prior to her health's declining, she was a member of Southern's Hospitality Ministry. She continued to support this ministry even though she was no longer able to attend services in person.
Although Mozelle sacrificed much of her time to support the ministry of her church, she made certain her family was cared for in every way. She epitomized what a Christian mother should be and will be sorely missed.
She was preceded in death by her son, Daryle R. Smith, Sr.; two brothers, Daniel Hughes, Jr. and Rev. Warren Hughes, one nephew, Michael Duncan, Jr. and one stepchild, Raynell Smith.
Mozelle leaves to celebrate her life and cherish her memory, one son, Andre' Smith (Carmelita), one daughter, Deborah E. Smith-Pilson (Michael); one sister, Erma Hughes- Duncan; two grandsons, Dante' Smith and Daryl R. Smith, Jr; one great-grandson, Eric Smith, two great-granddaughters, Lon'Dyn Smith and Genesis Smith; two, nieces, Shelley Duncan and Kelly Duncan; one stepson, Donnell Smith and a host of other family members and many, many friends.
