MELVIN TRULY OLIVER peacefully departed this life on July 26, 2022, at the Arlington West Care Center. Melvin Oliver, affectionately known as "Bear", was born August 13, 1940 in Baltimore, Maryland, to Carrie Vaughn. Melvin was raised by his loving adoptive father, James Truly Garfield Oliver, and his wife , Lula Oliver. Upon Lula's death, his father married Irma Oliver, who continued rearing him. Melvin took great pride and felt truly blessed to have had three loving mothers. Melvin was raised ib Sparrows Point, Maryland. At a young age, Melvin joined Union Baptist Church with his parents and accepted Jesus as Lord and Savior. On January 11, 1964, he was united in wedlock to Candis Belle Settlers (Dixon) from Littleton, NC. Together they settled in the Turner Station Community. From their union, four children were born, Michelle Renee, Monique Lynnette, Aletha "LeeLee" Yvette and Melvin Carlos. He loved and adored his children.
Melvin was an athlete. He enjoyed various sports, but his passion was baseball. He played for the Baltimore Braves Negro Minor League Baseball team. He continued his love for baseball by coaching little league for the Turners Recreational baseball league. Melvin was an avid sportsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling and playing pool. Melvin's gardening skills were well known in his community. He was known to grow various fruits and vegetables and would always share them with anyone. He enjoyed watching westerns and baseball and spending time with family and friends. Melvin worked for Raymond Metals in his early career and spent the later part of his career at Melvin C. Benhoff as a bricklayer. Melvin was well known in the community and took great pride in helping anyone in need.
We will miss his handsome smile and his generosity. Melvin will be remembered for his strength, love, loyalty and commitment to family and friends.
Melvin is preceded in death by his parents, James Truly Garfield Oliver, Lula Oliver, Irma Oliver, Carrie Vaughn and siblings, Sedora Chavez, Oliver "Butch" Vaughn and Sonja Sykes.
Melvin leaves to cherish his memory four devoted children, Michelle Oliver, Monique Holland (Jeff), Aletha "Lee-Lee" Oliver and Melvin C. Oliver; 13 grandchildren, Tyrone White, Erika Piggee, Terrell Greene, Tearah Greene, Norelle Oliver, Tonya Oliver, Christina Walker, Andre Oliver, Brea Sharps, Daija Oliver, Chandler Oliver, Jeff Holland, Jr. Jada Holland and 12 great-grandchildren; he is also survived by his sisters, Vivian Bailey, Gwendolyn Bell & Verona Webb, sisters-in-law Nettie "Teen" Settlers, Elaine Williams, Ruby McMillan & his-brothers-in-law, Conway Williams and Nathaniel "Nay" Settlers and a host of other nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.
