Melvin D Colvin

Melvin DeLeon Colvin, the oldest son of the late Willie D. Colvin and Garner Berniece Cruthfield-Colvin was born on January 6, 1953. He departed this life on January 23, 2024 after a brief illness.

Melvin met the LORD at an early age, giving his life to Christ by being baptized in 1965 by the late Rev. Issac L. Williams at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church where he served on the Youth Choir and Youth Usher Board.

Growing up in East Baltimore Melvin attended Baltimore City Public Schools, ultimately graduating in 1971 from Baltimore City College High School. While at City Melvin excelled on the football and track teams, earning All-MSA honors as punter on the football team in 1971.

After graduating Melvin started his working career at General Motors on Broening Highway. He stayed there for the next 32 years until he retired. While there he met the love of his life Carlita Adams when they were at a bowling event together. They were married in 1983 and were together for 39 years until Carlita’s passing in 2022. They added joy and love to their lives when their son Aaron came into their lives.

Melvin loved his job of being a father and rearing Aaron with love, care and respect. Melvin was an ultra active person and a devout “Pittsburgh Steelers” fan; his love of sports led he and Carlita to do a lot of traveling as he participated in numerous bowling tournaments and later softball tournaments. Melvin played for the corporate softball team at General Motors which afforded him many opportunities to travel the country.

He later played with co-workers on a team known as, “The Dells and ultimately for his favorite team, the “B-2 Raiders.” This team was considered to be one of the best Black softball teams in the state of Maryland and Melvin was their starting shortstop. However the second greatest love of Melvin’s life was dancing, he loved being on the dance floor “Steppin” to the music. He attended numerous hand dancing or steppin events in the region and the country. Always dressed to the nines, Melvin was the center of attention, and could dance any style that he needed to. He loved to teach others the art of Steppin and hand dancing through the group “Steppin-Out Productions “and later he became one of the more popular and requested DJs in the Baltimore-DC area. Melvin was the kind of person who brought light, personality, and joy to any event he was a part of. He was a friend to everyone who knew him, and was described by many who knew him as a very “good guy,” one who would do whatever he could to help you. His father said that Melvin was a “good son” and a “good man” never getting in any trouble. He epitomized selflessness in that he was always putting others before himself. Even though he struggled with MAJOR health issues, Melvin still attempted to care for and be a blessing to his wife and others. He understood that God called him to be a blessing and he sought to fulfill his calling.

Melvin was preceded in death by his younger brother Linwood (Lenny) Colvin Sr. (2011).

He leaves to cherish his memory: one daughter, Erynn Colvin; step-son, Quentin Adams Sr. (Junelle); grandson, Quentin Adams II; granddaughter, Kira Adams; brothers, Kenneth D. Colvin Sr, (Teresa), Alonzo Colvin Sr., Joshua D. Colvin (Lauren); sisters, Rhonda Harris (Ralph), Cassaundra Brown (Dell); aunts, Ola Colvin Jackson, Inell Colvin, Shirley Colvin, Carolyn Colvin, Lillian Crutchfield, Wanda Crutchfield, Esther Clay Lucas; one dedicated friend and caregiver Shena Pindell and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends.
