Mary B. Rodgers was born on September 9, 1933, in Meherrin, Virginia. She departed this earthly life gracefully to go home to be with the Lord on Thursday, March 27, 2025. She was the eldest of four children born to the late Mazie B. McCormick and Willie H. McCormick. Mary was affectionately known by the nickname “Sudie”.
Mary received her formal education at the New Bethel School in Virginia. After moving, she completed her education in the Pennsylvania Public School System.
She worked for Reading Hospital and the Pottstown Hospital as a nurse’s aide. Mary later relocated her family to Baltimore, Maryland. After many years of service, she retired from Johns Hopkins Department of Nutrition as a Dietary Food Service worker in 1998.
Sudie met and became good friends with Ms. Sarah and Ms. Dollie, and they were known as the Golden Girls wherever they traveled.
Mary joined Faith Baptist Church in 1973, where she served as a faithful member. She enjoyed attending church services, Sunday school, and Bible study. Mary was a member of the Simons Williamson Memorial Choir, Mass Choir, and Women’s Chorus. She was also a member of the Women’s Usher Board and the Golden Age Ministry until her health prevented her from serving.
She also enjoyed reading books, going on shopping trips, cooking for her family, and traveling with family and members of the Senior Fruits of Charity. She volunteered at Glen Burnie Elementary School as a school aide and later at the Baltimore Washington Medical Center as a Greeter.
Mary was preceded in death by her daughter, Hope R. Rodgers, and her brothers, Melvin L. McCormick and George B. McCormick.
She leaves to cherish her memories: daughters April Powers-Matthews and Leslye M. Betters; brother, Louis G. McCormick and sister-in-law Juanita E. McCormick (George); four grandchildren, Shaun D. Rodgers, Jamahl D. Jones, Ashley L. Matthews, and Demetres D. Gaskins; great-grandchildren, Shaun Antonine Darrell Rodgers, Jamahl Jones Jr., Ja’mari Jones, Troyauna Nickens, Troi Nickens, and I’auna Nickens; best friends Carrie Davis and Saraah Harris; and a host of other relatives and friends.
