Listen to Obituary

New Years Day 1940 not only brought in the new year, it brought to Tina Johnson and Cunningham Burrougs a daughter who they named Mary Magaline. 85 years later on the 24th of March 2025 she quietly left us, answered the call, gained her wings so she could "fly away".

Mary was born, raised and received her formal education in Manning, S.C. She was the oldest of 6 and saw 4 of her siblings pass on before her. Franklin, Rosetta, Joseph and Gladys were there to greet her at the pearly gates.

As Mary grew older, as stated she wanted to travel. She headed off to Tallahassee, Fl and later Baltimore, MD. She married Willie Richburg who preceded her to Glory in 2019. The majority of her employment was spent as a domestic worker. Bonds were formed during that tenure that endured until her passing. Two families that formed special bonds with Mary were the Carpenter and Franke families. She enjoyed providing the care for them until her health prevented her from doing so.

Mary accepted Christ at an early age and throughout the years, her greatest joy was serving the Lord and giving him the highest praise. It was evident that she enjoyed singing gospel music and listening to quartet singing. She joined The Historic St. Paul Community Baptist Church under the leadership of Dr. Gregory B. Perkins in 1986 and was a faithful member until her passing. Her voice would ring out to the Glory of God on the Revels Mass Choir, the Women's Day Choir and the Solid Rock Vocal Choir. Mary also served faithfully on the Nurses Ministry and the Missionary Ministry. She was always willing to lend her service to any of the auxiliaries as needed.

Mary had a loving and outgoing personality and a peaceful spirit. When asked how she was doing, she would say with her contagious smile, "I'm kicking, I may not be kicking high but thank God I'm still kicking".

Mary's memory will live on with her youngest sister Gracie James of SC, her special nephew Elpea (LP) White of PA, her brother-in-law Leroy Richburg of Baltimore, MD, her honorary Godson, Curtis Taylor along with a host of other relatives and friends.
