Listen to Obituary

Born on June 16, 1918 in Drivers, Virginia, Mary Evelyn Jackson, departed on November 14, 2019 at Patapsco Valley Center Nursing Home in Randallstown, Maryland. She was 101 years old.

Mary Evelyn, the daughter of the late Caroline Elizabeth Jordan Jackson and Howard Jackson, attended the Florence Grade School, where she completed the sixth grade. Her dream was to become a nurse, so she continued her education at East Suffolk School of Nursing. On her first exam she scored 95, and she kept that document throughout her life with her cherished keepsakes. Her father died in 1942, and being a devoted daughter, she dropped out of nursing school to assist her mother. Although she did not become a nurse, she never regretted her decision, she continued to help people throughout her life. Her life was full of dedication and commitment to her family, friends, community and church.

Mary’s mother passed in January 1953. Shortly after her mother’s death, she left Drivers, Virginia and moved to Baltimore, Maryland joining her older brother, LeRoy Jackson. Having a faith-based upbringing, she quickly looked for a church and she joined Fountain Baptist Church, under the leadership of Revered Dennis Barrow. Fountain Baptist Church became her home church and she became a very devoted member, she immediately joined the Pastor’s Aide Society and eventually became the treasurer and help that position until 1999. In 2002, she joined the Flower Circle and became of her meticulous financial recordkeeping she became the treasurer of that ministry as well. Members of Fountain Baptist Church were all proud of the fact that Mary was their oldest member.

Mary loved her home on Payson Street. She was very proud of her homeownership and was very independent. She worked hard to support and provide a home for she and her son, Larry. Her home was her special place for her flowers, plants, and doll collection. She was known for her fashion sense, being properly dressed for Mary, included hat, gloves, and matching shoes.

Mary’s brother, LeRoy Jackson, preceded her in death.

Mary leaves to cherish her memories her son, Larry Jackson; two nieces, LeRay Jackson and Lathea Jackson; and nephew, David Warren. Also, mourning her death are her devoted extended family, Doris Berry, Marceline Cole, Geneva Raysor, Vanessa Tallie, Lillian Person and as Mary would say, her “Big Sister,” Hattie C. Terrell. She will be missed by her devoted Payson Street neighbors, Theresa Myrick and Glennettee Fullwood and host of friends.
