Madeline
Santos
Jan 19, 1942 — Aug 20, 2026
Madeline Santos was born on January 19, 1942, in Baltimore, Maryland, to the late James and Cecelia Santos. She peacefully transitioned on August 20, 2026, at the age of 84.
Madeline attended Paul Laurence Dunbar Senior High School. Throughout her working years, she was employed by Bugle Laundry and later Linen of the World, where she remained until her retirement.
In 1961, Madeline met Herman Pettiford, with whom she shared a loving relationship and raised two sons, Gerard Pettiford Sr. and Avis Pettiford Sr. Madeline was a loving and devoted mother who instilled spirituality, integrity, respect, and strong family values in her sons.
Madeline was a woman of faith. She attended First Apostolic Church, where she served as an usher, and later attended Harvest Church International, where she faithfully served and enjoyed inviting others to worship with her.
Affectionately known as “Miss Matlene,” she was loved throughout her neighborhood. She had a special place in her heart for the neighborhood children, organizing trips and outings so they could have childhood experiences and create memories they would never forget. She also gathered the children under the streetlight to play games of Spades, creating simple moments that became lasting memories.
Madeline loved gospel music and enjoyed watching movies such as Sparkle and Ray. She had a heart for people, her family, her faith, and her community. Madeline loved all, and she was loved by all.
Madeline was preceded in death by her parents, James and Cecelia Santos; her son, Perry James Santos; her brother, Joseph Santos; and her sister, Sarah Bell.
Madeline leaves to cherish her memory Herman Pettiford; her sons, Gerard Pettiford Sr. and Avis Pettiford Sr.; her daughter-in-law, Tara Pettiford; and her sister, Sharon Weems. She also leaves her grandchildren, Sharese Pettiford, Perry Pettiford, Gerard Pettiford Jr., and Avis Pettiford Jr.; her great-grandchildren, Perry Pettiford Jr. and Peyton Pettiford.
Madeline also held a special place in her heart for Linda Pettiford, Deborah Lee, and Gail Thomas, whom she lovingly helped raise as part of her family.
Madeline was blessed with many cherished friendships, including a special 64-year bond with her beloved friends, Acquanetta Carol Phillips and Cecelia Walston, who remained dear to her throughout her life.
Her memory will also be cherished by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, friends and church family that will forever remember their beloved Miss Madeline.
