LUTHER VERNON GIPSON, son of the late Charles Ragin, Samuel and Annie Mae Gipson Wells, was born on August 1, 1952 in Summerton South Carolina, and was raised by his grandparents, Chamberlain and Annie Lee Gipson who proceeds him in death. He enter eternal rest with the Lord on September 9, 2020 after a short illness.
Luke, as he was affectionately called, received his education in Florida Public School System where him and his grandmother ventured out of their hometown to live with relatives for about 3 years. During his stay Luke found him a hustle selling water, cantaloupe and cutting grass. Luke and his grandmother later returned back to Summerton South Carolina where he graduated from Scott Branch High School. He became employed as a school bus driver for about 4 years. Shortly after Luke went to stay with his Aunt Lilly Mae Frazier in Philadelphia and found work and earned enough money to get him an old Jalopy "as he called it". In 1972 he ventured out once again to Baltimore Md. and made this his finally resident. Shortly after being in Maryland Luke did 2 years of college at CCBC for business. Later he became employed at Ropers. In 1985 Luke met the love of his life Beverly Stewart.
Luke worked various jobs and retired from University of Maryland. Luke was a laid-back kind of guy, kept people laughing with his talk, he loved going fishing, grilling out, making his special sauce, and cooking all kinds of beans. He also loved traveling down south to see his family.
Luke was proceeded in death by five aunts Lilly Mae Frazier, Cheryl Williams, Roberta Dingle, Cynthia Gilyard and Sarah Williams and 8 uncles Andrew Ragin of Philadelphia, Pa, Ivory Gipson of Fayetteville, North Carolina and Ludie Gipson, Carlisle Gipson and Albert Gipson, Romeo Ragin and Steven Gipson and Matthew Gipson.
Luke leaves to cherish his memory: his loving and devoted lover of 35 years Beverly Stewart, step-daughter, LaShanda Stewart who proceeded him in death, two sisters Maedell Lawson and Shelia Carter of Summerton South Carolina, five brothers and three sisters-in-law, Diane Stewart of Md. Davie and Sebrena Wells, Samuel Wells, Kevin and Judy Wells of Summerton South Carolina, Kareem Ragin of Philadelphia, Sylvester Fervency of New Jersey, two aunts and two uncles, Laversa and Dwayne Johnson, Ruth Gipson of Columbia South Carolina, Andre Lee of Virginia; two special cousins Jessie Lee and Harley Frazier, and three special friends Charlie McDonald, Ronald Johnson and Alfonso Johnson and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends
The family would like to express gratitude to Janice Arnett for being a good friend to Luke.
