LAURA MAE MAXWELL, born Laura Mae McCleod was the daughter of Mr. Roosevelt and Mrs. Essie Mae McCleod in Durham, North Carolina on April 18, 1940. She departed this life on December 28, 2023.
Laura, lovingly known as Mae, moved with her family to Fort Holabird, MD in 1944. It was at that same time, that Laura's parents and other Christian neighbors in Holabird joined together to be the founding members of First Christian Community Baptist Church. Later in life, Laura's pastor, the late Reverend Ernest Humphrey introduced Laura to her future husband, Wayne Maxwell.
She was educated in the Baltimore Public School System. Laura enjoyed her high school years at Paul Laurence Dunbar High School. After her schooling, Laura worked numerous jobs, but found her true mission at London Fog. She worked for over 30 years at London Fog, where she was a valued, dependable employee. Laura took great pride in work and enjoyed making life-long friends like Viola Potts.
In her free time, Laura loved bowling and was part of a bowling league for many years. Laura was enthusiastic about traveling, socializing and making new friends wherever she went.
Although Laura never had children of her own, she loved her extended family dearly. She was a devoted aunt to her many nieces and nephews, who brought her great joy; especially her "Right-hand and favorite niece", Sharon McCleod.

Laura is proceeded in death by her mother, Essie Mae; father, Roosevelt; husband, Wayne; brothers, James and Robert. She will be deeply missed by her loving brother, Carl McCleod of Beaufort, South Carolina; sister, Carolyn Booker of Baltimore, MD; best friends, Carolyn Phillips and Gwendolyn "Teenie" Franklin; two sisters-in-laws, Dorthy and Carol; nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great nephews; First Christian Community Baptist Church family and cherished friends.
Laura lived a full life and brought light to all those around her. She will be fondly remembered for her kindness, compassion and devotion to her family and friends. Laura was loved by many, and her memory will live on in our hearts forever.
