Listen to Obituary

Katherine winkler was born in Meherrin, Virginia on October 12, 1915

to the late Rosa and Alex Stokes. She departed this life on Friday, May 19, 2017

at Keswick Nursing Home. Katherine is the last of her siblings to expire.

She was married to the late Leroy Winkler on January 15, 1933. Katherine was

a devoted wife and mother for sixty-one years.

From this union came two sons, James Winkler (whom preceded her in death)

and Leroy Winkler Jr. In July 1968, she decided to expand her family and became

a foster mother to George and Keith Goodwin.

Upon relocating to Baltimore, Katherine united with the Faith Baptist Church on

October 3, 1937 by Christian experience. Katherine was a faithful and devoted

member of the Faith Baptist Church where she remained until her health no

longer permitted her to attend.

Katherine was employed at Amour Steel company and Mervo High School. She

decided to devote her time to becoming a full time foster mother later in life.

She was known as a soft spoken individual who enjoyed her family, neighbors

and friends. She enjoyed sitting on her steps and under the tree, while laughing

and joking with her neighbors on hot summer days.

Katherine leaves to cherish her memory: son, Leroy Jr. (Ruby), who devoted

their time caring for her for four years while she was in Keswick Nursing Home;

daughter-in-law, Lula Winkler; two foster sons, George and Keith Goodwin; two

grandchildren, Rodney Winkler (deceased), Vanessa (Eugene) Jackson and James

Winkler; three great-grandchildren, Valerie, Victoria Jackson and Dana Watkins; one

god daughter, Ida Hurt; sisters-in-law, Bernice Vaughn and Eva Winkler, Juanita

McCormick (George) Joyce (Rodger) Madison, Estelle McCormick, Arlene (Darryl)

Thompson; brothers-in-law, Carlye (Cindy), Larry (Inez), Dennis (Angie); and a

host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and numerous friends.
