JOANNE ELISABETH SHIELDS-MARSHALL, daughter of Elizabeth Bennaugh and thelate JoNathan Shields, was born on November 20, 1955, in Washington, D.C.
She departed this life on September 11, 2014 at Future care Coldspring Nursing Home in Baltimore, MD. Joanne was a faithful wife, devoted daughter, caring sister and most of all a loving mother. Lovingly known as 'Auntie Jo' to many, Joanne spent her whole life caring for others, whether it was caring for the children or family and friends, transporting our elders to and from their doctor's appointments and grocery shopping, caring for the sick and shut-in, or simply to lend a hand, an ear or shoulder to a friend. Her SMILE could illuminate a room and touch every heart within reach.
Joanne gave her life to Christ at an early age and joined Centennial-Caroline St. United Methodist Church under the direction of Rev. Dr. Iris Farabee-Lewis in 1993. She became a member of the Unified choir shortly afterward. In her last few years of her life. Joanne strived to live as Christ-like as she could. She never let her condition of her body compromise the strength of her faith.
Joanne leaves to cherish her memories: her husband Alvin (Butch) Marshall, Jr., her daughters, Kendra Shields, Ashley Marshall, her mother, Elizabeth Bennaugh Cheek; her sister, Rose Cheek (Janet) her brother, Reginald Cheek, her cousin, Derica Bulter (Barbara) and her sister-in-law, Cynthia Marshall- Harrison, her step-daughters, Monica Marshall and Cynthia Melvin, eleven grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, sixteen nieces and nephews and a host of godchildren, family and friends.
