Janice Vaughan Faulkner was born on July 16, 1948, to the late Bernice O. (Née Winkler) and Edward O. Vaughan. Janice departed this life leaving behind a legacy of love, outspokenness, and unwavering dedication to her family.
As a child, Janice and her siblings attended Faith Baptist Church, a place where faithful attendance was a requirement set by their parents. It was a simple rule: “No church, No Apollo Movies on Sunday”. She would later transfer her Christian experience to the New Antioch Church, where she was a faithful member until her health declined.
Janice attended Baltimore City Public School #143, then located at Hoffman and Eden Streets. As the baby girl among 13 siblings, she was often protected from bullies by her sisters. This early timidness gave way to a woman who would speak her mind regardless of the situation. Her love for her family was profound, and she lived for her son, Duane.
Janice graduated from Douglass High School in 1966 and married the love of her life, Lewis Faulkner, on October 14, 1967. During Lewis’s military service, their only son, Duane Faulkner, was born in San Antonio Texas, becoming the center of her universe.
Janice’s professional life was marked by her commitment as a loyal employee of the Social Security Administration, where she served for over 30 years at both the Woodlawn and Downtown Baltimore offices until her retirement.
The light of her life also extended to her cherished grandson, Donta A. Faulkner, and her two granddaughters, Vanessa Willis and Jazz-Monet Willis. She also adored her great-grandchildren: London and Peyton Faulkner, Caleb V. Twardowics, Lamont Wise, Charlie Willis, and Kendall Jones.
Janice was preceded in death by her niece, raised like a sister, Diana Banks; her sister in-law, Ernestine Vaughan (wife of Walter); and four of her siblings: James Odell Vaughan (casualty of war), Delores Vaughan, Lovelena Watson, and Walter Vaughan.
She is survived by her loving son, Duane Faulkner; one grandson; two granddaughters; and her six great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind a dear friend, Trenny, and eight siblings: Elizabeth Nesbit, Delores M. Queen, Beulah J. Reeves, Bernadine V. Scruggs, Carroll Vaughan, Sr. (Marsha), Robert Vaughan, Gary M. Vaughan, Sr. (Susan), and Tyrone Vaughan (Michael). Her memory will also be cherished by her goddaughter, Sandra Levin, and many others she took on as godchildren, great-aunts and uncles, nieces, nephews, and a host of extended family members and friends.
Her family finds comfort in the words of Psalm 73:26 “My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.”
