James S. (Tick) Mason

As the night slowly began to turn to another beautiful day, Wednesday, March 1st, 2023, God dispatched an angel to escort James from his earthly home to his eternal home, as James peacefully exchanged his cross for his crown.

James Solomon Mason, known by many as Tick, Son of the late James and Mabel Mason, who preceded him in death, was born February 1, 1938 in Valentines, VA. James was the fifth child of fourteen children.

At an early age he gave his life to Christ and joined Bethany Baptist Church in Valentines, VA where he attended regularly and served as a Junior Deacon. James was educated in the Brunswick County Public School System, and graduated from St. Paul High where he became a certified brick layer.

After graduation he joined the United States Air Force where he remained until he was honorably discharged.

Next James began to exercise his entrepreneur skills. Along with his brother, Roscoe, these successful endeavors included: Two entertainment clubs, an oil business, a car wash, and long distance trucking and hauling business.

James was a hard and dedicated worker. During his business career he displayed excellent, dependable, trustworthy, business management and interpersonal skills. His ambition was to always please his customers. During those years he was able to touch many lives. Coupled with James' humor and Roscoe's loving, supporting, and encouraging efforts the business blossomed with success and captured the respect of the entire community.

James is survived by three daughters: Dr. Renee Mason(Baltimore, MD),Master Sergeant Connie Williams(James)(Chesterfield, Va) and Shirley Mason( Dallas, TX); three sons: James Arnold(Baltimore, MD), Henry Moody(Richmond, VA) and Tyree Mason(Baltimore, MD); Five sisters: Gloria Drake(Baltimore, MD), Shirley Reid(Valentines, VA), Sally Flanders(E. Lansing, MI), Cecelia Cameron(William)(Baltimore, MD), and Alice Riley(Decatur, GA); Two sisters preceded him in death: Elsa Chiles and Wilma Manning; Six brothers: Philip Mason(Portsmouth,VA), Oris Mason(Janet)(San Diego, CA), John Mason(Annie)(Lawrenceville, VA), Roscoe Mason(Baltimore, MD), Attorney Lynn Mason(Ramona)(San Diego, CA), Alfred Mason(Stella)(Lawrenceville , VA); Grandchildren: Tamara Davis, Tracshawn Davis, Tamesha Davis, Arrow Spotted Elk, Isaac Spotted Elk, Isaiah Spotted Elk, Shanta Brayboy, Shantia Bandoo, James Arnold Jr, Justin Arnold, Ivannia Moody, fourteen great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and many, many, devoted friends.
