IVONNE MARIA POWELL, daughter of the late Howard and Irene Shavers, was born on March 19, 1946 in Baltimore Maryland. Early Thursday morning, May 19, 2016 God called her home after a lengthy illness.
Ivonne, affectionately known as 'Vonnie' to friends and family, received her education in the Baltimore City Public School System. She met and married Chester Powell who preceded her in death and from that union three children were born, Tonia, Ave', and Michael.
Ivonne enjoyed forty-four years of successful employment with the former Church Home and Hospital which later merged with Good Samaritan Hospital where she served as a Surgical Technician. In this role she assisted many doctors and nurses as they performed operations and procedures to save lives. She was known by almost every staff member of the surgical team, and was well respected for her high performance and dedication to the job.
Ivonne had many talents. She loved crocheting, making beautiful jewelry and singing. She loved fellowshipping with her friends and loved her family gatherings.
Ivonne was the eldest child of eight children. She grew up in Mt. Sinai Baptist Church and later joined New Tabernacle Baptist Church where she served faithfully under the pastoral leadership of Pastor Wilmer Holloway until her death. There was no task too great or too small that Ivonne wouldn't do. Ivonne served on several ministries especially the choir, which she had opportunity to direct. She had a sweet soprano voice that she used to praise and honor God in all her worship and her works. Ivonne was a humble servant who was committed to introducing her children and her grandchildren to the church, God's word and the love God, so that too would seek salvation. As her health concerns became more prominent, it is her daughter Tonia who became her daily caregiver until her departure. She provided excellent care to her mom who was supported by her brother Michael and two of her grandchildren; Quianna and Derrick Watties, her sisters and dearest friends.
Ivonne leaves a family legacy to mourn her passing: her children, Tonia Powell, Ave' Randall and Michael Powell; six siblings, a host of grandchildren and great grandchildren and many family members and friends.
