Listen to Obituary

HAZEL MARIE JORDAN, was born November 16, 1922 in Roxboro, North Carolina to the late Ferrell Jordan and Missy Jordan. She was the youngest of three children.

Hazel was educated in the Person County North Carolina School System. Born into a Christian home, Hazel joined and was baptized at Elijah Grove Baptist Church in North Carolina. She continued her lifelong Christian journey of active and dedicated service with the Mt. Sinai Baptist Church.

In 1943, Rev. Jarrett R. Butler joined Hazel and George W. Gray in marriage. From this union they were blessed with five children of whom three preceded her in death, Brenda Hazel and George.

Hazel had word ethics that were above standard. She was employed in numerous jobs. Above all, Hazel loved and trusted the Lord. She also loved her pastors and her church family.

A frequent traveler, she enjoyed her travels with Sisters Richardson(d), Carter, Cannady (d), Trotman and Jackson. She also enjoyed close fellowship with her squad, her Royster cousins, Susie, Frances, Alberta and Marie and Sister Freeman, all whom she missed dearly. Known as the best sheet pincher ever, Hazel was fastidious and loved to clean. Her passion for angels resulted in a collection of them. The loves of her life, Hazel really enjoyed the time spent with her grandchildren.

She leaves to cherish her legacy two daughters, May C. Compton (Edward), Min. Carrie L. R. Russworm; grand-daughters, Denise (Lamar), Sharon (Robert), Lisa, Nicci (Monte), Carrie (Alan), Sondra, Jacquetta (Antoine); grandsons, Dytania (Delores), Braxton (Nelda), Kirk, George (Serena), Steven; two grandsons, Stephen, Terry, one granddaughter, Cheryl pre-deceased Hazel; thirty-five great, forty-one great-great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, family and friends, a dedicated prayer partner, Deborah Taylor for nineteen years, a committed niece, Ada McCoy, whom was faithfully at her side and a sincere and dedicated friend, Deaneen Doucette, who helped in aide of her care.
