Mr. George Cherry, Jr., age 75, of Baltimore, Maryland passed away on Friday, December 4, 2020 at home surrounded by his love ones, following a two and half year battle with lung Cancer.
Preceding him in death were his mother, Martha Cherry-Daniels; his father, Kelly Jones; his daughter, Stephanie D. Cherry and Step-Daughter, Lisa M. Bright; his son, Lorenza Fenner; his grandson, Brandon M. Cherry; his sisters, Margie Tillery, Annie Jones and Queen Taylor; his brother, Clarence Daniels.
George “Chicken” grew up in North Carolina in his early years, then moving to Baltimore, Maryland during his teenage years…where he made his home. While living in Baltimore, George received his education and graduated from Paul Laurence Dunbar High School.
Marine Corps Cpl. George Cherry is a Veteran of Vietnam War, where he earned several medals, including the: National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal w/1*, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal w/ (1960-), Rifle Marksman Badge and Good Conduct Medal. He served three years with distinction as a Marine in Vietnam. He was wounded during his tour and received other commendations for his dedication and bravery. The discipline and patriotism he learned while in the Marines never left him, as friends and family will attest.
After many years of driving tractor trailer trucks, George “Chicken” retired from D & D Transfer, Co. George was a family man and loved spending time with his family and friends, both near and far. He loved his family and was fiercely protective of each one of them. He loved working on cars,” Cherry’s Auto & Repair” was always quite busy. His work ethic and his mechanical ability was legendary. He took pride in the fact that he always left the customers Satisfied.
Surviving are his loving wife, Ruth Cherry of Baltimore, Md, daughters; Mary Hamilton, Newport News, Va, Dr. Clora C. Applewhite-Mabry (Earl, Sr.), Rocky Mount, NC, and Robin R. Cherry, Baltimore, Md; son, George L. Cherry, Sr. (Pame’) of Baltimore, Md; devoted Goddaughter, Rachel Bright of Baltimore, MD; sisters, Pastor Nancy McDaniel (Alvin), Whitakers, NC, Lillian Jones (Melvin), Brooklyn, NY, Earlene Brown (Rudolph), Laurelton, NY, Marilyn Younger (Willie), Clinton, MD, Rebecca Burgess, Neptune, NJ; brothers, Isaac Daniels, Rocky Mount, NC, David Daniels (Gwen), Whitakers, NC, Apostle Gregory L. Daniels, Durham, NC (Melinda), Kelly Ray Jones (Peggy), Brooklyn, NY, Curtis Jones (Rosa), Brooklyn, NY, James Jones, Laurelton, NY, Marvin Jones and Calvin Jones, Tarboro, NC. He also leaves behind eighteen grandchildren, twenty-two great-grandchildren and a host of cousins, nieces, and nephews.
