FLORENCE MAE STOKES was born on January 28, 1929 to the late Arthur and Ida Mae Redd. She was born in Prince Edward County Virginia. She departed this life on October 14, 2016 at Future Care Nursing Home after a long illness. She was baptized at Forest Baptist Church in Meherrin, Virginia and received her education in the public schools of Virginia.
Florence was a person who loved to have fun and entertain family and friends. She loved music and loved to sing songs. She joined Zion Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Moses Williams and was a member for many years. As a choir member at Zion not only did she sing spiritual songs, she also was part of a gospel group that toured many churches where she lifted up her voice in song.
She was employed at Church Home Hospital in the housekeeping department for 30 years. On November 2, 1952 she married Burnell "Shortie" Stokes who preceded her in death on April 27, 1989. There was no shortage of love between Florence and Shortie as he was called. They dance and traveled together and really enjoyed being with each other.
She leaves to mourn her one and only daughter Marjorie G. Harrison(Walter who devotedly cared for Florence and Marjorie); one grandson Philip A. Harrison II(Rihanna), one granddaughter Tonya Harrison; seven great grandchildren, Kaia, Naudia and India Harrison, Kymora Singletary, Malachi Powell and Dana Bown.
