She grew up in Old Town and received her early education in the Baltimore City Public School System. In 1960, she started working for the Steel and Tin Company, where she worked for over 40 years. While employed there she was the recipient of several awards from her employer and the City of Baltimore. One of her favorite things to do was bowling, where she won many trophies with her bowling league, she loved watching sports and her favorite football team was the Baltimore Ravens where she would lovingly say, “Lamar Jackson is my nephew”. She also claimed that Barack Obama was her “man”. She was the matriarch of her family and was often the glue that held the family together.
Sister King was preceded in death by her late husband Walter King Jr. (d.1988); her son, Alexander Spence Jr. (d. 1999); and her grandson Alexander Spence III (d.2005). She leaves to mourn and cherish her memory four grandchildren, Titia Estep (Terrance Estep), Tammi Spence, Aaron Spence (Tisa Spence) and Tavia Spence.
