Emma Hughes was loving, caring, humble, nurturing, God-fearing woman. She was born on December 4, 1921 to Arkilions Spencer in Charlotte County, Virginia, the historic county of Charlotte Courthouse. She lived a long and happy life and transitioned from this world to be with her heavenly Father on June 20, 2025 at NCC Assisted Living.
Emma married Robert Hughes on January 21, 1941 in Baltimore City, Maryland. He preceded her in death. That blessed union brought forth her daughter Jean Hughes Elsey, son Eric Hughes and three other beautiful children Gordon Lawrence Hughes, Vanessa Hughes and Robert West all who preceded her in death and also grandson Timothy Hughes also preceded her in death.
She was a devoted mother and homemaker. She lovingly cared for, not only for her family, but anyone in need.
Mrs. Hughes was a great cook, and the family eagerly looked forward to having her fennel cookies at Christmastime. She loved to bowl, was an avid crocheter and knitter. The beautiful items she made are still treasured by family members today. Emma loved doing the Lord’s work by working as a missionary, caring for the sick and singing in the Gospel Choir. She enjoyed listening to gospel music.
Some of her favorite hymns were Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, There’s Something about that Name, I’d Rather have Jesus Than Silver and Gold; and His Eye is on the Sparrow. She found comfort in her favorite scripture the 23rd Psalm and encouraged others to live the scripture John 13:34 " Love one another as I have loved you." She was a member in good standing of Faith Baptist Church for over eighty years.
Mrs. Hughes learned to sew At Carver Vocational High School and truly took pride in making clothes for her family. She was an honored member of the Golden Age Club and enjoyed traveling. One of her favorite places to visit was Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
Emma will be remembered with love and gratitude by her grandson Kirt Elsey, several grandchildren including twin grandchildren Joycelyn and Malcolm Crawford; devoted great granddaughter, Jazmin Hemphill, niece Patricia Cornish, daughter -in-law Daisy Hughes, her adopted family, the Bennetts, friends Orangie James, Angie Boone, Bonnie Jones and Catherine Wagner; devoted cousin Arnetta Hewitt; cousins, friends, devoted care provider Donna Williams and many other relatives and friends.
